Lyman Amsden's photo with his War of 1812 Survivors' Pension. Lyman, son of Simeon Amsden and Abigail Whitney married to (1) Cynthia Tibbetts, (2) Mary Whitman.
Below is the letter written in 1902 that William Oscar Amsden sent to Gabrielle Mertens. Her mother had sent her from Paris to Belgium to discourage the romance. William was in Paris to photograph the Paris Exposition and had gone to London for Queen Victoria's coronation. Somehow, William located Gabrielle and somehow she understood this letter (she spoke no English and he no French). William is the son of Lyman William and Maria Jane (Davis) Amsden.

Above is a letter from William Oscar Amsden, "Pops", to his daughter Alice Anna Roth. He had retired and Gabrielle, his wife, was working as a nurse in New York City, so he took a bus out West by himself. Alice claims to know nothing of the people and relatives he speaks of in this letter.
