First Letter -
Hello Peter, Henry T. Amsden was born in New York state, USA in 1818. He settled on the frontier in the Territory of Kansas in the 1850's. When the Civil War started in 1861, he joined the 9th Kansas Cavalry and served as a sergeant in Company B. His company was assigned to guard outposts in eastern Colorado and western Kansas. After the end of the war, he returned to Kansas and filed a claim for the homestead he left behind. I do not know the outcome of his claim. I have not found other records for him until 1885 when he wrote letters to his daughter, Minnie, in Dwight, Kansas. The letters date from 1885 to 1892 and describe some of his life as a miner in Colorado. He died in 1892, reportedly gored by a range bull, and was buried in Dwight, Kansas cemetery with military honors.

Second Letter -
Hello Peter, Thank you for looking for H.T. Amsden. I have not been able to find Elizabeth's maiden name nor her place of birth. A bit more information on the children might help you, though. According to the 1860 Kansas census, Sarah, Nathaniel and William were born in Illinois. Martha was born in Wisconsin. Arminda, Lyman and Lucretia were born in Iowa. Amanda, Amelia and Julia were born in Minnesota. Quite a bit of moving around. Thank you again for your help. Doug Lusher Grandview, Missouri, USA

In the Gendex list of Amsdens I find Calvin and Mariam's family listed, with this email
address. Can you tell me if you have any souce for your information on Calvin Amsden than
Murray Brown's some descendants.... or B. Warnick's book? Do you have any information on
Mariam Guile Amsden, or any of their children that comes from other sources? Calvin is
buried in a cemetery near where I grew up (in Shelby county Indiana), I think, although
the birth dates don't seem quite right. Mariam is beside him, and beside her is my
great-great grandmother, Polly Ann Amsden Guile. I am trying to find out which Amsden
family Polly Ann (Mary Ann) belongs to. I will be happy to give you all the information
that I have on Calvin, Eleasor B. (he was sheriff and treasure of Shelby County), Rhoda
Melvina, and Elizabeth Scott. I have found no trace of Prudence Pauline.
