John was a Master Mariner and was for manyyears engaged in the West India Trade for Daniel Fox, of Portland, ME.On 18 Oct 1775 John arrived off Portland, from the West Indies on asloop with a cargo of coconuts. When he attempted to enter the harborhis vessel was chased by an armed British ship under Capt Mowatt ofthe Royal Navy. John's vessel being smaller than that of the enemyran into Dyer's Cove. They were persued by the enemy in open boats. Heescaped by running up the mouth of a small creek so far that thepursuers were afraid to follow. Late in life he retired from the seaand taught navagation. He was one of the earliests advocates ofUniversalism in Portland, ME.

John Fickett, Immigrant ancestor, may havebeen a French Huguenot, for the only occasion on which he signed hisname, so far as has been discovered was on a petition of New Hampshirepetitioners to the general court of Massachusetts 20 Feb 1689-90,asking for protection from the Indians, when he spelled his baptismalname "Jean" as this spelling is never found among the English for aman's name. The fact of French ancestry seems certainly established bythis one record, Maine Genealogy, Vol. II Portland Library R929I.L77,John or Jean Fickett was born about 1645, probably in the old country.It is a family tradition that John Fickett lived at one time inScotland then in the North of Ireland for a short time (probably usingthese places as stepping stones to this country). It was said that inold times to raise the ire of the Fickett's was to call them "BogIrish" John Fickett lived in Portsmouth, NH and Scarborough, ME. Hesettled on six acres of land in Scarborough, ME boundaries commencingat a pitch pine stump Northern side of Jamaica Brook, running over tothe cove of Andrew Libby's lot twenty rods. Then Seth Fogg's lot ismentioned as a boundary on one side, and this joins the Nunsuch River.It is believed that the present Scarborough Beach Railroad Station islocated on this land. John Fickett was granted land in Scarborough byHenry Joceling Esq. and Joshua Scotts Esq. out of land posessed bypatent by the council of New England and confirmed by Sir FernangoGorges, Lord Proprietor, etc. about 1663-1682. Deposition of JohnFickett at age 25 years, Maine History and General Recorder Volume 4page 141. "The deponent being examined maketh oath that whereas EllnorBaly is bound by the townsman of Scarboro to ye rooke in ye marsh andsoe to run Northwest by West which lyne takes in ye house of JohnJackson which house is in controversy between Richard Foxwell, RichardCurmine and said John Jackson. John Fickett tooke this oath the 4th ofJuly 1670 to truth of the above written, according to ye best of hisknowledge. Francis Neale Associate"
John Fickett was a hunter, farmer, and fisherman and took shortvoyages. The Indian war (1675) broke up his home in Scarboro, but hereturned when hostilities ceased. John Fickett was listed as asoldier in King Philips was 18 July 1676 from Scarboro.
