Athol Transcript March 24, 1925
Mrs Emily Amsden, aged 100, passed away at the home of Mrs. GertrudeField on Park Avenue, Friday morning after a short illness. She hadbeen having a slight cold which developed rapidly the last day or twoand Mrs. Amsden passed away about 6 o'clock . Mrs. Amsden celebratedher 100th birthday on Nov 18, and barring a slight deafness sheenjoyed all her faculties and on her birthday seemed more like a womanof seventy than of a century. Emily well remembered seeing AbrahamLincoln several times when he was president when he visitedSpringfield, MA. Her grandfather Samuel Benjamin was a Lieutenant inthe Colonial Army. She has one nephew living, Spaulding Sage of GreatBarrington, who is over eighty years of age. Mrs. Amsden was born inGranville, MA , and she was the widow of Clinton Amsden, who died in1901. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. David Rose and for many yearsMrs. Amsden lived in Dana, and had been in Athol 22 years. She wasthe Aunt of Mrs. Robert E. Beecher. The funeral was held Sundayafternoon at 2 o'clock at the rooms of J.F. Higgins Co. Rev. E.B.Young officiated. Burial is at Dana Center.
Mrs. Amsden had made many friends in town since coming here. She wasa beautiful woman, living in peace and serenity, quiet and unassuming,but of gracious and beautiful deposition. As she said on her 100thbirthday she never expected to live to be 60 when a girl, but she didlive to enjoy 100 years of life and happiness.
Emily and Clinton had no natural children, but adopted a child wholater married Col. Beecher, nephew of Harriet Beecher Stowe. MurrayM. Brown, Descendents of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge Massachusetts,(1934)
