According to John Hoyt McLeester, Jack (John Arthur) Johnson, thefirst black heavy weight champion of the world (12/26/1908-04/05/1915)was reported to have come to the hotel. He was married to a white ladyat the time. She was allowed to eat in the dining room but he was not.He drank in the bar, but the bartender broke each glass from which hehad drunk. According to Marion McLeester Johnson in a letter dated05/28/1995 - "Diamond Jim" Brady and Lillian Russell, the singer,frequently stayed at the hotel.
