This is the Thomas who came to America in 1635 on the ship"Christian". He settled in Stratford with his first wife "Goodie", whowas hung as a witch in 1651. He then married Johanna Beardsley, awoman 36 years younger than he. She had a family by him but thechildren are shown as having "never been seen". " History andGenealogy of Old Fairfield" indicates Thomas Bassett who married SarahBaldwin as the son of one of the sons of Thomas Bassett who marriedJohanna. Thomas and Sarah Baldwin were parents of Thomas Bassett whomarried Sarah Pierson. The paragraph that appears in "A History of TheOld Town of Stratford and the City of Bridgeport", Vol. 2 by Orcuttwhich claims John Bassett to be the son of a second wife of Thomas(Sarah Person) is refuted by both the "History and Genealogy of OldFairfield" and the land deed of John Bassett
when he makes provisions for a home for his parents, Thomas and Sarah,on land willed to him by his father.
History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield- Came toAmerica at age 37. Served in Pequot War in 1637. Settled in Windsorand made a freeman of Conn. Colony, April 1640. Received a homelot of2 &1/2 acres in Fairlfield, Aug. 1653, and was freed from training inFairfield, 1659. Before removing to Fairfield, he may have lived ashort time in Stratford, and we must suppose it was his wife who wasexecuted as a witch at Stratford in 1651. He was one of four "poormen" whose debts were forgiven by the will of Dr. Pell, 1669. His Inv.taken 14 Jan. 1669/70; widow and children mentioned but not named. Hisadministrators sold an acre in "Concord field", 4 May 1678 and ThomasDickerson acknowledged next year that his father Dickerson gave theacre to Bassett. He m.(2) after 1656, Johanna, widow of ThomasBeardsley of Fairfield, b. abt. 1634, by whom he had a family. On 25Nov. 1661, he sold the house of Thomas Beardsley as his "successor."In May 1666 he testified ,age 68, in the Benfield case, and his wifeJohanna, age 32, also testified. This statement of his age identifieshim with the Thomas who came on the Christian.
Data from William Newell - little bit of info on Bassett line from thebook: "Bassett Book by Wheeler A. Bassett, 1928". It was found at theLDS Library in Salt Lake City. He came on the ship " Christian deLondon" in 1634 and located at Windsor, CT. with the Stiles family. They evidently sailed from Plymouth, England, or came from there. In1650 the original Thomas sold his property and moved to Fairfield, CT.where he died about 1670.
