Data from Branca included copies of the pages of "Famous Familes ofNew York"....Historical & Biographical Sketches of Families which insuccessive generations have been identified with the Development ofthe Nation. Vol. 1 by Margherita Arlina Hamm, Heraldic Publishing, NY1970. According to this book, Jesse de Forest along with other"Walloons" first petitioned the British for a grant of land inVirginia but were refused. The document survives in the BritishMuseum. After the English rejection, the group then petitioned thegovernment of the Netherlands for the heads of the families be allowedto go to America to select a suitable site for a colony. This wasgranted in 1623. The order read: "For this purpose were chosen LouisLe Maire, Bartholomie Degan, Anthoine Descendre, Anthoine Beaumont,Jehan Godeban, Abraham Douillers, Dominic Masure, Jehan and GillesGaynes, and Jehan Mousnier De La Montagne, over whom when landed Jessedesforest (sic) was to have command."
The entry continues, "Jesse de Forest kept a diary of this journey,which, completed by de La Montagne, is still in existence. From it welearn that after sailing in the Pigeon, Pieter Fredericsz, of Harlem,master, in July, 1623, they spent some six weeks exploring the AmazonRiver and on December 16, 1623, entered the Oyapok River. Here aplace of settlement was selected and they prepared to return, only tolearn that the ship's orders were that all should remain except twowho could return and bring out the families. Jesse de Forest waivedhis chance of going back and thus was lost to his family, for he diedfrom sunstroke. Jean Mousnier de La Montagne returned as soon asopportunity offered, bearing the news of his associate's death.Eventually, he married Rachel de Forest, one of Jesse de Forest'sdaughters, and came to New York."
Data from Lewis contains this note from Eleanor M. Hall - "ThePoll-tax of the people of Leyden, Holland in the fall of 1622 listedJesse DeForest with his wife and five children and their maid servant,Margariete Du Can, still living on Bandstratt. Jesse was killed duringan expedtion to Brazil in the siege of St. Salvidor in 1626. At thistime Dr. Johannes de la Montagne became a boarder in the De Foresthome and soon after married the daughter Rachel".
