All data from Kinney. Excerpts from the Mildred Klatt compilation:...His father died when John Fred was only 10 about 1873 and so hismother was left with 4 children. They had to go to work as soon aspossible so John Fred went to work at 10 years of age and worked untilhe was 20 (on farms I imagine). His mother remarried and John Fredleft home as she favored a daughter of her new husband, and so hefound a new home with the Nissens and a son in that family became as abrother to him, Matt Nissen. At the age of 20, he was drafted into theGerman army (War of 1864) as by then that part of Denmark was underGerman control and he had a choice of going into the army or leavingthe country. He left the country and landed by ship in New York on 1Jun 1883. He arrived in Cedar Falls, IA on 3 Jun 1883. When hearrived in Cedar Falls, he had a $0.10 paper piece. There he workedon a farm for 4 years. He would sit at night with a little schoolgirl and study her first grade books. This child spoke German withher dad and Danish with her mother, and was trying to master theEnglish language. In 1887, he came to Clay County near Peterson, IAand worked for the Phil Kirchner family for a while, one of the firstfamilies in that part of the state and heard real pioneer stories fromthem, so he did not consider himself a real pioneer. He furthered hisEnglish education there studying the children's school books. In thefall of 1887, he bought 100 acres of prairie land near Peterson. Hesaid that the railroad had already come through Peterson by then andhis country was coming up fast. He went back to Cedar Falls for thewinter. In the spring of 1888, he drove from Cedar Falls to Petersonin a spring wagon. He came across country making the trip in severaldays, but he nearly drowned his team forging a stream at West Bend. The ice had gone out and the rivers and sloughs were high. A colt wasborn on the way and he lifted the colt into the wagon when he fordedthe stream. On his Golden Wedding day he said he was young then andanxious to get back there and break the sod on his new land. In Juneof that year Magdelene Hjortland also came and worked near Peterson, and so the romance must have flourished for they married in the springof the next year on March 9, 1889. He and Magdelene drove 10 mile orso in a lumber wagon to the shack of a Lutheran minister 2 miles eastof the present site of Royal, IA. On their farm near Peterson, hebuilt a 2 room house where they lived for 36 years until they retiredin Spencer, IA in 1925. He became a naturalized citizen of the UnitedStates on the 16th of December, 1895 in Black Hawk Co. when herenounced his allegiance to the King of Denmark. John Fred sentpassage money to Denmark for others to come to America and signed forothers guaranteeing that they would not become charges. He sent forMatt Nissen, the boy that was like a brother and set him up infarming. His step-father must have died because his mother came toAmerica and lived at Newell, IA where his sister Mary married PeterBonde and lived at Clinton, IA. His younger brother Henry came toAmerica but was lost track of (he tried to locate him once). Talk wasthat Henry was in the insane assylum at Clarinda at one time. TheDanish Lutheran Church of Royal held services in the CongregationalChurch in Peterson once a month and the Heicks attended this. Hefinally located his sister Mary at Clinton and they visited often.John Fred kept buying more land to add to his - mostly land that wasup for sale for back taxes. He really made good when he planted flaxon his rich prairie land.
He brought his Danish Bible along with him to this country and in itwas written the births of their 10 children. On their 47th weddinganniversary they gathred 9 of their 10 children and distributed 600acres of their farm to them. They went on to celebrate their 50th and
55th wedding anniversaries. At the time of his Golden Wedding DayCelebration he made the remark that his family was like "One Man'sFamily" which was a popular radio program at that time. They had over100 people in their descendants by then. Grandpa was jovial, a goodfeeler, always ready for a good joke. At our Christmas get-togetherssome one would give him a pill box of pennies or some joke and hewould roar with laughter. He was short, blue-eyed always with amoustache, always with a cigar in his mouth. His trip to America took14 days. In the North Sea the ship ran into rough waters and hestarted to go below, but nearly everyone was getting seasick, so hewent back up to the top of the ship. John Fred had an 8th gradeeducation in Denmark, but it was the equivalent of 10 grades in thiscountry.
