All data from Kinney. John came, with his father John Johnson, toTable Grove, IL in 1867. This was an exploratory trip, as the fatherwished to bring his wife, Angie, and their four younger children tothe United States. He and his father stayed in IL for two years, thenthe father returned to Sweden to get the family. Young John remainedin IL with new friends to await them. Circumstances prevented thefamily from migrating to the United States; so John remained, alone atage twelve, and worked for different families. Early in life helearned self reliance. There was a widow with a family of boys whowas always very kind to him. This was his home, away from his family,and he was forever grateful to this kind lady. He kept in touch withthe family as long as they lived. (Joe Bohannon bought John his firstpair of boots. He never forgot that.)
Homesteading had opened the west, and John started out on horseback,working along the way as he went. He often worked in the broomcornharvest. Broomcorn was a first crop on newly broken sod. His routetook him to Salina, KS, and then north into NE. It was customary inthose days for travelers to seek lodging in the homes along the way.At one home where he stayed, the wife said to the husband in Swedish,"I don't think he is a tramp because he is wearing a good overcoat."They didn't realize he could understand them because he had no accent,perhaps because of the early age he learned English. He filed aclaim on a homestead in what is now Frontier Co. (HomesteadCertificate No. 2472 dated 13 August 1892). He lived at first in adugout, and then in a sod house. (He built the frame house around1900.) In 1887 he returned to IL where he married Sarah MargaretBaughman, a schoolmate. (School in those days was measured by readersrather than grades. McGuffeys was often quoted.) John and Sarahcame to NE and lived on the homestead, nine miles north of Bartley andthree miles east of Freedom for their entire lives. John owned thisfarm until his death in 1939. (Sarah had preceded him in death in1921.) In 1946 when the family sold the farm, it was the firstownership change on the homestead title signed by Benjamin Harrison.Allen, Knowles and Eunice were born in the sod house. Hazel, theyoungest, was born in the frame house. Allen and Knowles attendedschool in a sod schoolhouse in Cottonwood district. There was also asod church, named Prairieland, a mile from the homestead.
