(p 87) Grandfather, holding to his loyalty to British principles, wascompelled to remove from the United States on that account and abandonbusiness and property which he never obtained the possession of orcompensation for--So he began life in Halifax, as Cooper, Carpenter &etc. Made contracts with the Dockyard authorities and succeeded verywell.
(p 71-2) On first coming to Halifax, I lived with my grandfather'sfamily on Lower Water Street. He seems to have come here from NewYork and to have died in Halifax. I could not find his grave in thegrave yard of tthe little Dutch Church, but on a transient visit to StPaul's Cemetery I came upon a tombstone much defaced having on it thename Enoch Wisswell. Not having a pencil in my pocket, I could notcopy the inscription and a long time passed before my next visit whenI found that the stone had been removed having said to have gone topieces and the cemetery cleaned and all broken stones and rubbishcarted away. I have never seen the burial place of grandfather'sbrother who came with him to Halifax about the year 1774. His namewas Joseph. He was married and had sons William J. Edward and Henryand I think two daughters, one of whom Eliza married my Uncle Jos B.W...Uncle Joseph died aged 95.
(p74) But I could not find in grandfathers bible the particular Enochwho was his grandfather. The entry runs thus: "Enoch Wiswell Senr.born in Boston Sep 17, 1725. Married there Elisabeth Burch, March 17,1749. He died August 17, 1797 age 71. She died Dec 1st 1778. Therewere 12 children born of this whom Grandfather was the third but Ihave not found record of the rest yet. I get the following recordfrom his old Family Bible now in the possession of my cousins,daughters of my Aunt Ann Maria Wiswell who was married to Edware.Baker, Esq at...
(p71) Enoch seems to have been a favorite name and I expected to finda list of my ancestors in my Grandfather's Bible. But he only refersto his father as the second or Senior of that name and spells itWiswell not Wiswall...
(p 68) When my Uncle Herbert was in Boston, he visited DorchesterCemetery to try and find Grandfather's tombstone. He found quite anubmer of gravestones on which the name of Enoch was inscribed...
(p73) Thomas, whom I mentioned on pages 67 and 69 had a son Enoch whoalso had
a son Enoch and there were others. But I could not find inGrandfather's Bible the particular Enoch who was his grandfather.
(p72) There was a Mary Wiswell, I think a Sister of Grandfather andUncle Joseph, who married to Mr Butler as her first husband and afterhis death she married Mr Nathl Callender...he had an officialsituation in the dockyard and lived opposite the dockyard gate. Hedied Halifax Sept 1830. A probate of him is in posession of mycousins Arabel and Elizabeth Baker, Pleasant St, Halifax. Uncle Josephdied aged 95.
(p75) After the Entry given at the top of this page (p74) Thefollowing is transcribed from Grandfather's family record in the oldbible: There follows this genealogy. It is incomplete as tomarriages and childeren. They were all born at the house built andowned by Grandfather Wiswell on the West side of Lower Water Street no112. The back of the lot was a garden.
(p74) Enoch Wiswell born at Boston? March 1st 1778 came to Halifaxleaving property on account of loyalty to British Government 1774married Ann Wright Oct 1st 1797 who died Jul 21st 1854 age not stated.He died at Halifax Dec 30th 1859 aged 91 years... the offspring ofthis marriage was..(page 75)
(p 86) In perusing Grandfather's record, I found the name of MaryWiswell who married first Hough Butler Jun 13th, 1789 and afterword inMay 1807 Nathaniel Callender Esq..died at Halifax Septr 30th, 1830..His wife survived him and I have the memory of a visit to her when inHalifax with my mother in 1836. She was called Aunt Callender andmust have been Grandfather's sister. There is an oil portrait of MrCallender in possession of my cousins the Bakers, Halifax. To closethese records, I mention that Grandmother died July
21st 1854 and Grandfather died Dec 30th 1859 aged 91 years. They wereboth buried in Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax. Requiseat in Pace
(p87) Previous to coming to Halifax to reside, I saw my Grandparentsoften in transient trips from home. In 1855, I was made Sedry of theN S Telegraph Co and became an inmate of their dwelling until bothwere laid to rest and learned much of their history. Grandmother wasa fine housekeeper all of her life and was never free from work andcare.

This is the line I have been trying to connect with the Halifax, NovaSoctia line and statements in the genealogical-historical record ofWilliam Henry Wiswall (1830-1920) that he made about information inhis grandfather's Enoch Wiswall's Bible and record--and also what hisgrandfather told him about coming to Canada on account of loyalistsympathies, seem to tie the two families, Massachutetts and Canada,together. The family record gave following with some dates slightlyoff, but not too far from what I found in the original church and townrecords:
(p 74 of W. H. Wiswall History) "Enoch Wiswell Senr. born in BostonSept 17th 1725. Married there Elisabeth Burch, March 17th 1749. Hedied August 17th 1796 age 71. She died Dec 1st 1778."
Her death in 1773 according to Halifax record. His death 11 Augaccording to ditto.
Their daughter Sarah B. Wiswell married 3 Nov 1777 Gershom Tufts andhad Elizabeth Tufts woh married 1802 John Henry Keeler (JohannHeinrich Koehler). Their daughter was Abigail Keeler who marriedEdward Middlemass and died in Nebraska in 1855 on way to Utah. Herdaughter, Abigail Middlemass, married Charles Lowell Walker and livedin St George, Utah.
Ruby Keeler, movie actress of the 1930's descends from Charles WilliamHenry Keeler, brother of Abigail Keeler Middlemass.
Bill Bixby, TV, actor descends from 2nd marriage of Anna MiddlemassBird Foizey, sister of Abigail Middlemass Walker of St George, Utah.Anna lived in Sacramento after 2nd marriage. Her marriage and sealingto James Bird was cancelled by Brigham Young about 1869.
