Benjamin Hawkins (US Agent to Creek Indians who passed through theCherokee Nation in 1796) hired two Cherokee interpreters; SallieHughes and a half-blood, Mrs Sallie Waters. Sallie Waters' aunt, wasthe wife of Chief Sour Mush (Ogosata). HAWKINS PAPERS 12/1/1796 (pages20-21)
Sallie's son, George Morgan Waters, told John Howard Payne a strangestory concerning his cousin, James Vann, Vann's uncle, Charles Hughes,and Old Chief Sour Mush, all members of the same Clan. [In accordancewith the Cherokee Matrilineal System that means that Charles
Hughes was the Maternal half-brother of James Vann's mother and auntSallie Waters.]
