Loucks gives informationfrom "Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation" byJohn Ehle, published in 1988. Loucks notes that Major was the 4thchild, the previous three having died of illness before his birth.His mother was from the Deer clan, and her father was a Highland Scot.Ridge was "blood kin of Attacullaculla, the high chief, even thoughthe chief was of the Wolf clan..." About 1776 his family fledHiwassee to escape a large white army coming to avenge the killing ofwhites on the Catawba River in NC. They lived alone in the mountainsuntil the end of the Revolutionary War.
After the war they moved to the village of Chestowee, near Hiwassee,where Ridge's father, "Dutsi, was accepted into the local council. In1788 Ridge went to war in Dragging Canoe's army, age 17 years old.Returning home after 7 months of war, he found his parents had bothdied of illness during his absence. Also mentions his father only tookone scalp in his lifetime.
In an email dated 04/05/02 Loucks says "I haven't finished the bookyet, but it looks like this will be all it has to say about hisparents. The part about being blood kin to Attacullaculla helps theargument for his father being Oconostota. But the part about onlytaking one scalp and living in the mountains during the Revolution,seems to contradict it. I've seen info indicating Oconostota wasprominent among the Cherokee during the Revolution and had earlier ledthe Cherokee in a war with settlers during 1760-61. The date Ridge'sfather died also seems to be pretty specific. Where do your birth anddeath dates for Oconostota come from? If the birthdate is correct, hewould have been in his sixties when Ridge was born. My gut feeling atthis point is that Oganotota/Dutsi probably was not Oconostota, butdoes belong somewhere in the family, perhaps a nephew."
