Moravian Journals, 12/20/1806; refers to Polly Terrapin's husband ashaving died of Small Pox at Hightower. Presumably, this was John"Cherokee" Vann. His father, John "Trader" Vann, was also a"linguister" (or interpreter).
To confuse the issue more... In 1770 Alexander Cameron appointed JohnVann (apparently a white trader) as official interpreter, replacinganother white trader, John Watts (deceased). In 1775 anotherinterpreter, Joseph Vann, was involved with the Henderson land sale atSychamore Shoals acting contrary to the orders of his employer,Alexander Cameron. In 1779 Robert Due (another white
trader) wrote to Cameron that a number of white men, including JohnVann and Joseph Vann, had joined war parties.
Therefore; there are probably two separate Vann mixed-blood familiesdescending from their white progenitors, John and Joseph Vann, andtheir Cherokee wives.
