Hello Jill -
I just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know some thingsthat I found out about Joseph Emerson, who is listed in your databaseas an ancestor (died March 28, 1822).
I recently bought the house next to the one that Joseph Emerson builtin Alfred, Maine in the 1790's. Actually, although the house that Ibought was built in 1978, it sits on land that used to be part of whatis known around here as "The Old Emerson Farmhouse". The story behindthat is that the couple who were living in the farmhouse divorced, divided the property and the wife built my house...lived about 200feet away from her "ex". Kind of strange!
Anyway, I am a fan of geneaology and history in general and have takenup researching the history of this property. Joseph Emerson was oneof the first settlers of Alfred, which was incorporated as a town in1794. In fact, the old barn attached to the farmhouse has the date"1795" emblazoned
on it. The place stayed in the Emerson family until 1949, when thelast male of the line, James Emerson died intestate. His wife diedshortly afterward, and his two daughters sold the property.
Joseph and his wife Lydia Durrell are buried in the old cemetary intown, next to the Alfred Parish Church (UCC). The family plotincludes Joseph, Lydia, Judith Merrill (first wife), Edward, Dorothyand Benjamin (children, I believe). Their stones are still quitelegible. It's a very pretty town
center...it looks much as it always has...Alfred is a very nice, typical New England town.
Also, the people living in the farmhouse just had an antique auctionthe other day...the lady friend of the owner had quite a collection.I know that in 1949, the house was sold off INCLUDING all of it'scontents, so I'm pretty sure that much of the collection that wasauctioned off the other day
belonged to the Emerson family. It seemed such a shame to see it allgo.
Also, interestingly, I found out that Joseph Emerson is also a cousinof mine...your database indicates descent from ElizabethBulkeley...she's my ancestor as well! I guess that makes you and Irelated, too...small world.
At any rate, I just wanted to let you know what I've found out...hopeyou find it useful.
Regards,
Jonathan H. Cryer
