[2174] All data from Olson. He was 8 years old when his father died and wastaken to London, England by his uncle, Capt. John Salter, to beeducated. Capt. Salter later took him to sea with him as anapprentice. He was 13 years old when the American Revolution started.He was captured when he was 18 (Jun. 14, 1780) in a letter-of-marquebrig called the Aurora and committed to Old Mill Prison, Plymouth,England and remained in this dismal prison more than a year, untilsoon after the capture of the British general, Cornwallis at Yorktown,VA Oct. 19, 1781 when there was a general exchange of prisoners. Whilein Old Mill Prison he copied in his log-book the names of five hundredprisoners, names of vessels and dates of capture. He was one of thefirst officers selected for the new navy of the United States, whoserank in the navy was that of lieutenant, but who, in his capacity ofmariner is always referred to as Captain. He entered the service Dec.5, 1798. John Adams, who was then president, signed his commissionJan. 7, 1799.
