Data from McLeester and Fink.
The family name was changed from Foltz to Fuller at some point. WhenEmma's brother, Henri, was asked by her daughter, Adelle Fink, aboutthe problem she was having in finding birth or any other records forthe name Fuller, he replied that she should check under the nameFoltz. When pressed for information, he said for Adelle to ask hermother. When she did this, Emma began to cry with distress, so Adelledeclined to ask anything more.

Fink writes, "The story told to me by my mother, Emma - William M.Fuller was her father, born in Medina Co., Ohio. She said his fatherdied when her father was around four years old and that his mothermarried a man by the name of Lackey." Note from McLeester - On a tripto MS to visit Aunt Dee Dee (Fink) I saw an old picture of a man namedLackey now in the possession of Mike Ray, Fink's son.
Fink writes further, "I found an Albert Lackey and wife May or Maryliving right next door to Willie and Laura Foltz on the 1880 census inMarshall Co., Ind. Albert was 39 and a shoemaker. (Mother always saidher grandfather was a shoemaker). May or Mary was 38 which would havemade her 13 or 14 yrs old when Grandfather (William Foltz) was born.
My mother and father ran away after their marriage in Hattiesburgbecause her father disapproved. Neither my mother's family nor myfather's family knew where they were for over 10 yrs.
My first knowledge of my grandparents was when I was four yrs old. Wehad been living in Memphis, Tenn when I was born in 1911. My fatherhad disappeared leaving Mother with five children, DeVere, Orville,Adelle (me), Charles and Helen and carrying Robert. When my father'smother somehow learned of our whereabouts, she came to Memphis to seeus and since Daddy had been gone for quite a while and we were inneed, my grandmother advised Mother to sell what little we had and goto my other Grandmother's (Laura in Hattiesburgh). I remember all ofthis, but there was no grandfather there, only Laura, Henri andBenjamin. I remember Aunt Hannah lived in Hattiesburg with my cousin,Helen.
I learned later, if it was true, that my grandfather, William, traveled with a circus and that is where he probably was when we wentto Grandma Laura's. Robert was born there.
Later, Daddy was found in Gulfport and we all moved there as soon asMother could travel after Robert's birth.
It has always been a great mystery to me as to why the name waschanged from Foltz to Fuller. I thought it was probably because Helen(McLeester - Helen Wells?) had no father, she believed.
My Grandmother always told her she was a bastard and she was 84 yrsold when my husband and I produced her birth certificate and herparent's marriage license which we obtained in La Porte Co, MichiganCity on our genealogical search. She died several years later butwith her question answered.
Hannah's son, Frank, who went by the name of Frank Montague had to goto live on Aunt Ruth's farm after his mother died. He lived therewith Aunt Ruth and both Grandpa & Grandma Fuller (Foltz) until he wasa grown man and left to go in the service.
He lives in N.O., La now and has a farm in Carrier. We talk on thephone about the family mystery. He is puzzled as to who he really is.He asks me if he is Helen's (his sister) child. I assure him that heis not. My Mother told me he was Dr. Rush's and his mother's son. Asfor the name Montague, that is a puzzle. Whether Hannah married aMontague after Judson Wells divorced her or whether it was aficticious name acquired because Hannah may not have known the thedivorce was granted to Wells. Never the less, Frank was supposed tohave been adopted according to all decent explanations. I don't knowif Frank has belived all these years he was adopted or not as theysaid, since there was never a Montague father and no explanation as towhere he is.
I don't know if I should tell Frank all I know and have been told. Heis a sick man in this (sic) seventies. What should I do.
This name change from Foltz to Fuller was revealed to my by a drunkenUncle during my questions needed answering for a security check whenmy son, Michael, joined the Army. I was totally surprised and when Iasked my Mother, she began to cry. I assured her if it made herunhappy, I would never mention it again and that the Army could findout who my grandfather was. She told me I could find out after shedied.
Until I found Helen's birth certificate and her parents marriagelicense, I thought perhaps the disgrace of such a thing had caused thefamily to change their name and move.
I kinda believe the story Frank tells.
I asked Frank if he had any clues as to why the name was changed, thathe surely had heard something during all the years he lived with thosethree old people. He said he heard something about grandfather beingin prison or hiding to keep from going to prison. Granddad was arailroadman and Mother said he was a machinist in the engines' roundhouse. Frank said when grandfather could no longer perform his dutiesas a machinist, he was a railroad detective and in this work killed ahobo. He said the RR company would not stand behind his actions andhe had to get away.
I think the reason my Mother was so upsest was because she had marriedmy father as Emma Fuller instead of Foltz and was probably afraid shewould be prosecuted. I don't know - it is all a mystery to me."
Note from McLeester - There are no dates on the above notes that AuntDee Dee left. I do know that as early as 1990 she had told me shethought she had solved the mystery of the name change. At that timeshe declined to tell me the solution. I think this was because ofFrank Montague being alive and ill.

The notes for Mary and Martha are mine. Of course it could be thatthese two are the sisters of the opposite spouse. If the deathcertificate for William M. Foltz is correct (I don't have a copy),then I suspect my assumption is correct.
