All data from McLeester. MacLeister/Fletcher
The Mac-an-leisdears were arrow makers to the MacGregor Clan. Thename was modernized to Fletcher. * The tradition is that this septwas made up of the original inhabitants of the highest and mostmountainous parts of the district of Glenarchy, their possession beingthe lands of Achallader and Baravurich.
There is a saying current in the Glenarch district - " 'Se clann anLeisdear a thos a chiad smirid a thug goil air uisge an Urcha". (Theclan of Leisdear was the first to raise smoke to boil water inGlenarchy).
A compact of man-rent and bond of friendship existed between this clanand the Stewarrs of Appin. The stronghold of the clan was AchalladerCastle, the ruins of which are still to be seen on the shores of LochTulla. Shortly after the event of '45, however, the clan removed fromthere to Dunans at the head of Glendaruel. They carried with them thedoor of the old castle of Achallader made from pine grown in theforest of Crannich and this door is now that of the private chapel atDunans House. MacLeister is the form of the name which is found inIslay.
In Smibert's "Clans of Scotland" occurs an interesting allusion to theclan. It is as follows:
"Occasionally Rob Roy suffered disasters and incurred great personaldanger. On one remarkable occasion he was saved by the coolness ofone lieutenant named Mac-an-leister, the "Little John" of his band. Afine, active fellow of course and celebrated as a marksman. Ithappened that MacGregor and his party had been surprised and dispersedby a superior force of horse and foot and the word was given to 'splitand squander'. Each shifted for himself but a bold dragoon attachedhimself to pursuit of Rob Roy and, overtaking him, struck at him withhis broadsword. A plate of iron in his bonnet saved MacGregor frombeing cut down to the teeth, but the blow was heavy enough to bear himto the ground, crying as he fell, "O! Mac-an-leisdear, is there neathing in her?" (i.e., the gun). The trooper at the same timeexclaimed, "Damn ye, your mother never wrought your nightcap!" and hadhis arm raised for a second blow when Mac-an-leisder fired and theball pierced the dragoon's heart."
Slogan - Ard-coille (The Woody Heights)
Badge - Pine
Tune - Gathering, Salute, Lament
The above was copied by hand from a book in the public library inLondon, England by me when I was 14 or 15 years old (1958-1959).
* Note - I believe what is meant here as modernized really indicatesAnglicized. The Webster's Third new International Dictionary of 1986lists:
fletcher - [ME fleccher, fr. OF flechier, fr. fleche = arrow + ierer]: maker of arrows

MCLEESTER HISTORY by Marion McLeester Johnson,daughter of August LangMcLeester, dated 1/24/75 (original on file);
"Alexander....Born in County Roscommon, Ireland. Ancestors emigratedfrom Scotland during the reign of Charles I or II, because of afailure in the crops that drove the lowland Scotch (sic) to cross theIrish Sea and settle in Ireland which was in control of the English.
He came to America in 1847, and started a type foundry with ThomasCollins. It was known as the Collins-McLeester Foundry. Theyprospered and had a good trade with newpapers and book sellers.
Collins decided to withdraw from the firm but Alexander bought him outand continued for a number of years under his own name. Eventuallywas forced by the American Type Founders Co., which was taking overall the foundries, to sell his plant to them. After that he retired.
Alexander married for the second time and his wife called herself Mrs.MacAllister. He had two sons by her, Alex and Robin. (Dad and UncleEddie never saw their grandfather's first wife, their grandmother, whodied about ten years before they were born). Alexander lived to be 82years old when he died.
The children by the first wife were: Charles (born 1857), Tom (born1855), and Jane (born 1859).
Charles' children were: August Lang McLeester and John EdwardMcLeester. Tom's children were Grover and Mary McLeester. JaneMcLeester had no children."
