There are few records extant that relate to the life of Clement BuxtonI. It is quite probable that his origins are England but nothing hasbeen found to prove this statement. His origin, dates of immigration, vessel, etc, have never been found in any known extant record.
It is conjectured, and presumed that he probably arrived in Stamford,Fairfield Co, CT, sometime after the initial settlement of Stamfordand by 1646. Whether or not he married prior to coming to thecolonies or at Stamford, Fairfield Co, CT, remains unknown.
All children are punitively assigned as his children, as there are norecords to prove otherwise since Clement and Family were the onlyfamily of the name Buxton found in Stamford, CT during the period ofhis lifetime. That the indicated children were of another BuxtonFamily is quite unlikely, thus until proven otherwise they areassigned as the children of Clement Buxton I.
On 15 Mar 1650, Clement "Buckston" recorded his land holdings[Stamford Town Records, 1:45], as 6 1/2 acres of upland in the NorthField; 3 acres of upland in the South Field, and 4 acres of meadow inthe East Field, south of land owned by Jonas Weed.
His Inventory in addition to the usual clothing, farm and householditems, the Inventory listed his house and lands, 45 bushels of wheat,60 bushels of peas, 19 various livestock, a gun, one sword, and fourBibles, and other books.
Where did Clement and Unica Buxton come from? Of course we assume theyare from those parts of England associated with the Parlimentarians, but have no evidence to suggest what town or shire. Mrs. RobertBuxton of Albuquerque, NM did much correspondance with areasassociated with the name "Buxton" but found nothing. Robert CharlesAnderson compiler of the "Great Migration Study" at the New EnglandHistorical & Genealogical Society felt it unlikely that evidence ofClement & Unica will be found in Colonial records prior to theirappearance in Stamford, CT. He also found no evidence in Englishrecords while researching other families for the Study.
Some earlier Buxton researchers made him the brother of Anthony Buxtonof Salem, MA but the current (1998) Historian for that group, BeatriceBuxton, has disproved the relationship beyond doubt. Also earlierresearchers suggested he was associated with Oliver Cromwell duringthe rebellion, perhaps in Cromwell's army but no evidence was citednor has any been found. He appeared in Connecticut about 1647 when theEnglish soldiers not needed for garrisons or for service in Irelandwere being disbanded.
Another curiousity is whether Elizabeth Buxton, who was apparentlyborn in England, was their daughter or his sister. Judging from theirapparent ages she could have been his sister or even some otherrelative.
When Clement died in 1657 an inventory of his estate was taken givingus the opportunity to consider how his material possesions indicatedhis lifestyle in Stamford. He was living well for the time and place, not rich but comfortable. He owned tools and supplies for shoemakingas well as for farming. His furnishings and clothing were more thanmany others and he had some things that were rare. He owned a desk(writing box) often used by army officers and others who traveled andwrote or kept records. He owned 3 Bibles, since printing was quitecostly this was very unusual. At his death, his children, exceptElizabeth were minors. His son reached the age of majority while hismother was married to Nicholas Knapp, when his inheritance from hisfather was transferred to him.

Clement II dealt actively in Stamford real estate. He was the granteein 48 transactions, including six layouts by the town, in the period1668 to 1713, and grantor in 28 Deeds dating from 1668 to 1719. Hisson, of the name, who came of age in 1704, may well have been theprincipal in some of the indicated Deeds.
Two of the Land Record Deeds [A:18-19as cited as sources in thiswriting], deal primarily with negotiations between himself andNicholas Knapp, his step-father as relates to the property formerlyowned by Clements father, Clement I.
