"Dear Cousin Eliza:
I acknowledge receipt of 3 papers from you very recently, onecontaining a very pleasing acct. of a Marshal's success in taking theCensus in 1840. I, too was engaged in that business the summer of1840. I was 5 mos. at work and it paid me, over and above allexpenses paid out, $903."

Hiram A. Haight shows up in the 1840 NY census in Chautaugua Co., page66, Westfield Township - ID#NYS4a1114601. However, he apparentlyisn't in the 1830 census...or is under another household as there isanother letter from Hiram from Volusia (Mayville), Chautaugua Co., NYdated May 3, 1830.

Dear Cousin Eliza:
I rec'd from you two papers, which were right welcome, by them I learnthe passing events of the day in your County. I am anxious to hearfrom you and your family. Aunt Mary Ann in particular. I am informedthat Mary Ann is married, I hope she got a good man for I esteemed herthe very best of all women, possessing the two most superiorproperties for a woman, vis: refined beauty and the mildness of anangel. I want to hear from Annis for I always loved her. Amanda hasdoubtless a great responsibility on her mind, as I hear that Aunt MaryAnn has retired from the domestic concerns of the family. Amanda wasnearest my age and I still feel a strong prepossession for her, and infact, I always dearly loved her. I should be pleased to know howOscar get along, and how Aikin's health is now. If you cannot writeme yourself, I wish you would hand this to Oscar, who I think will. Iwant to know how the Capt. enjoys himself, and in fact all the news ofthe place, for I feel a great interest in Willsboro still; as I spentthe best days of my youth in that place. I often think of thoseunwise scenes of my youthful days. But all are passed and old age isfast approaching and I shall soon be numbered with the dead. I spendmy time very unpleasantly. I pant for the society of my formerfriends. I long to see you all, more especially Amanda. I have letout my farm and again entered the Land Office. You doubtless know theLand Office in this place was destroyed by a mob in Feb. last and Iwas thrown out of business. I have worked hard on my farm since,until April 25th, when I entered as Assistant Agent at Mayville, 7miles from my place, at $750.00 a year and board myself out of it. Igo home every week and my family will live in my house till Oct. whenI shall move them here. I may stay in the office for 2 or more years.I got $52 a month last winter and now they will give me $750 a year.I am a slave, make the best of it. I am not a free man. My wages aregood and yet, I am a hireling. My wife will keep the post office tillfall, when I shall resign. We have had a cold winter and most of themany cattle have died. John, you doubtless know, is in New Orleansand is rich and keeps slaves. Bosworth lives in Cleveland, Ohio; andis rich. Daniel left his wife, Maria, last Sept., and went to Ohiowhere he taught school last winter. I have written many letters toMaria, but she will not answer one of them. Mother is well and doesmuch of many kinds of work. Charlotte is not very rugged and most ofher family affairs develve on Mother to do.

These occasional tokens of recollection aregratifying to me beyond any ability I have to express them on paper.You were always, with me, a favorite cousin. I ardently loved you inchildhood, adored you in youth and do homage to your name in old age.I am very anxious to see you, and though I may never have thesatisfaction of seeing you on earth, I know I shall meet you inHeaven, for one so perfect, so pure and holy as yourself, God willsurely receive into his holy rest, where I hope to arrive when I shallhave finished my earthly pilgrimage.
Joseph Moore, Jr. passed through this place on Election Day, Nov 7th.But as I was one of the Board, I could not stop to have anyconversation with him which was a very great denial. I hope to seehim when he returns. I pressed him hard to stay with me till thefollowing day, but he and Theo. Sheldon, who was with him, would notconsent to stay. Joseph looked as young as when I left Willsboro 19years ago. I want to see Aunt Mary and all your brothers and sisters.Tell Capt. Sheldon, I have not forgotten him and may see him anothersummer. Say to all my old friends that I often think of them andwould be happy to see them - more especially, Levi, Alanson, M.S.Hoffnagle, et. I am quite well and all my family which consists ofwife and two daughters, oldest 14 1/2 years and the other 5 1/2. Myolder daughter (Volutia Ann) is a very good scholar. I keep her atschool all the time. We have a splendid three story brick Academy,very large, each story full of students within 1-0 rods of our doorwhere my girl can go in all weathers. We have the best teachers,seven in number. The institution is as reputable as any in WesternNew York. Our village is truly a very pleasant place. Here are fourplaces of public worship, three of which are brick; also we have herethe Surrogate County Clerk, one State Senator, one member of theAssembly, Loan Comm. Of U. S. Money, Sup't of Common Schools, DistrictAtty., Sup't Co. Commissioner, Master in Chancery, Examiner inDocuments of Land Office, seven attorneys, eleven stores, oneDruggist, two groceries, one silversmith and a multitude of mechanicalestablishments, not surpassed by any in the States.
The Society here is refined, not surpassed by any. Most of the peopleare members of some one of the churches. The Sabbath is a day ofquiet rest, and there is no store or public house that has a licenseto retail spirits; therefore no assembling of the people on Sunday norany other day except to transact their ordinary business. Noswearing, no fighting, no drunkedness is ever seen or heard in ourstreets. There are three public Inns or boarding houses, but nonekeep any liquor not can any be obtained in the village except at theDruggist's shop for medicines. I am out of any kind of employment. Iattend to the calls of my family, saw wood for two stoves andsometimes I take care of my cow. Collect my rents for my farms whendue, etc., and am quite at my leisure; but this kind of life does notsuit me. I would prefer some active business but I dare not risk whatlittle I have of cash in any speculation these hard time. I have $1,200 at interest, well secured, and get my interest punctually. Ilease out my six farms, all of which do not contain more than 366acres. I do some surveying and have some little perquisites from thetown. Out of this I make out to pay my Priest tax and lay bysomething yearly, besides my family expenses. I shall when the timecomes right, go to farming again. One of my farms is on the GreatStage Road from Erie to Buffalo, and the best land in the County. Onthat farm, I intend to live at some future time, as I am now tired ofliving in a village confined to 1/4 acre of land, in a state ofidleness. My garden is very fine, and I raise considerable sauce,grapes, raspberries (3 kinds) currants (3 kinds) flowers, shrubs, etc.The wheat crop is good and abundant. Beef and Pork and such are verycheap, as are sheep. Tallow from five to six cents and Pork for $3.Judge Edson has been sick some time past but is now better. He is inno business; says he is poor and is collecting his debts. Albert ishere with him, the other boys are away doing for themselves. I sawMrs. Edson at church today. Aunt Lucy chase's sister, Mrs. Mattesonleft the place, as Matteson says, very mysteriously. He want sheshould come back and assist him in taking care of the children. Youprobably may se her at your place. She is now in Vermont at MuttonHill. I see the Holcombs and Booth occasionally. They are many milesfrom me. I saw Mrs. Holcomb sometime since. She and Holcomb livewith Charles Patterson in the town of Vilinoria in this county. Boothlives at Forestville in Hanover in this Co., All well. Allen sawJoseph Moore and had some talk about Willsboro. Allen has 6 boys and1 girl. Charlotte lost her girl this fall at 11 years of age, and isnow left with but one child, a boy about 13. Bosworth lives nearCleveland, Ohio; a lawyer and is, I understand, doing a good business.Tell Abram Chase that I have not forgotten him and should be veryhappy to see him. I should be pleased to hear what has become ofUncle Charles Haight and family. Capt. J. Hatch and Aunt Betseypassed here a year ago going to Nauroo, the Mormon City. I have notheard from him since.
