That the records contain no mention of her other than as awife and mother, is a good report. She evidently went quietly abouther duties, keeping out of trouble and bringing up her children to beuseful members of the community, in which she was aided, doubtless, bythe father's good example. She was still alive on Dec 18 1678, whenshe was a witness at the baptism of her granddaughter, Tryntie, namedfor her, the child of her son, Pieter and Hester Webbers. This is thelast mention of her in the public records, from which we infer thatshe died about this time, as she would be then at least seventy yearsof age; the worthy ancestress of so large a family. From her marriagerecord at Haarlem, Holland, we learn that she was a native ofGroningen, the earliest church records of which town date only from1640.
It will have been noticed that in all these records there has been nomention of the surname "Van Deursen". Deursen is a place name; thefamily originating in Deursen, Brabant, one of the provinces of theNetherlands, and, as was customary among the Dutch, took theirsurnames from the place of their birth.
It was however, a matter of individual choice whether the surname wasused or not, and this has been the aggravation of all Dutchgenealogists and students of early American history. Some members ofthe same family would use the surname, while others were known simplyby their patronymic, or father's name. This latter was the case withAbraham Pietersen; he was Abraham, son of Pieter; sen, se, sz, and s,terminating a name, meaning "son of". "Van" means from, or of, andhas no particular meaning apart from this; although some, erroneously, think it is a mark of nobility, as is the case with "von" in Germany. Thus, Abraham Pietersen Van Deursen mean Abraham, son of Pieter, fromDeursen. He did not use his surname, nor did any of the family until1667, when Pieter Abrahamszen Van Deursen is so designated in thebaptismal record of one of his children. The general use of thesurname by the English people who settled in America, doubtless hadits influence in causing the habit to become more general with theDutch among whom they lived. After 1667 we find the name used by allthe members of Abraham Pietersen's family habitually; although thespelling of it becomes various as the years pass on and members of thefamily remove to other parts of the country.
Thus we have Van Deursen, Van Deusen, Van Dusen, Van Duse, Van Duzer,Van Duzen, Van Doozer, and Van Dozen. Some unite the two words intoVandusen, while others have dropped the Van altogether. A few haveretained the original Van Deursen, but the general mode has come to beVan Deusen in the United States and Van Dusen in Canada.
