LDS records show three different spellings for his name: AbrahamDuersen (Vanduesen); Abraham Pietersen Van Deursen; and AbrahamPietersen Van Deusen. LDS records show two places for marriage on12/9/1629: Houtstratt, Netherlands; and Noord, Haarlem, Netherlands.
The Reformed Church at Haarlem, Holland, has annotated "Inscribed formarriage November 25, 1629. Abraham Pietersen, bachelor, born atHaarlem, dwelling in the Great Forest Street (Groote Hout Straat),with Tryntje Melchiors, Spinster, native of Groningen, dwelling in theBlacksmiths Street (Smedestraat), married December 9, 1629 in GrooteKerk, now the Reformed Church at Haarlem. As no children of thiscouple are mentioned in the baptismal books from 1630 to 1635, it isallowed to suppose, that the young married, soon after the marriage,left for the new World.".
He came to America in 1636 under contract to the West Indian Company.He came from Deusen which is a small hamlet in North Brabant, theNetherlands. He arrived at the island of Quetenease near RI offNarragansett according to Colonial History of NY Holland Doc V 11 P134. Quetenease also known as Dutchman's Island. He came to Americawith these five sons: Isaac, Melchert, Mattheus, Jacob, and Peter.
In 1641-43 Abraham was an Assemblyman. August 29, 1641 he was one ofthe twelve men whom the community chose to resolve on everything withthe director-general and council.
Also a miller and a tavern keeper in New Amsterdam and as a miller hewas called "Molenaer". In April 2, 1658 his water mill was on theEast River near James and Cherry streets in NY according to Cal ofDutch MSS p.193.
He manufactured groats. He rented bowery #6 in 1639 for 20 years for43 schepels of rye and 90 pounds of butter. On Nov 29, 1640 he rented#5. On Aug 21, 1663 he sold the mill to Jan H. Van Bommel. March 16,1648 he was an innkeeper. In 1653 he was at Mespachtes Kill, LI, NY.April 14, 1657 granted the burger right and was Lance Corporal ofCompany - Second of the Burghers Corps. 1659 he was a member of theDutch Reform Church. 1665 he resided on the east side of Heeren St.,now Broadway. His third residence was south of Wall St. oppositeTrinity Church, New Amsterdam.
He and his son, Issac, swore allegiance to King William the Third. Theabove information all came from Bernice Ferous Weir of NY in 1994.
