Hi Jill,
Re your posting at: listing of Middlemas family. Maybe someone willbe interested in this little bit of history.
My husband and I bought a house from my Grandmother in 1976. Thehouse is in Cherry Creek, Nevada. There were/are lots of "treasures"in the house and outbuildings. At Christmas this year, we were pokingaround in the shed and came upon a leather bound book for the BiscuitMining Company. These are pay records from 1907-1908.
Today we were looking through the book, and thought for fun we wouldlook up some of the unusual names. (We are both genealogy nuts).Anyway, your site came up in relation to Barney Middlemas.
Below is the record for Barney's employment at the Biscuit MiningCompany in Cherry Creek, White Pine County, Nevada. Hopefully it willhelp you in some way.
At least you know Barney was still alive and working in 1908 (workingevery day). One page does include his signature, so if anyone isinterested in a copy, I would be happy to make one for them.
What an interesting piece of history we found!

Note from McLeester - This bit of history would not have beenpreserved at all if Cliff and Lynne had not found this "treasure". Iwrote to ask permission to publish this data and received thefollowing e-mail from Lynne and Cliff.

Absolutely - go ahead. Like you, I believe these little bits are tospecial to not share. I sent
the same email to three people who had posted a Middlemass connection. One email bounced back, and another fellow thanked me, but I think didnot share my enthusiasm. I suspect he was not closely relatedeither. "Brent Havekost"

I am glad you appreciated the information. I thought it was greattoo. Imagine working all day every day for only $3.75. But thenimagine room and board at less than $1.00 a day....

Cherry Creek, White Pine County, Nevada is a "ghost town". There areabout 25 residents at this time. Most are retired or have disabilityincome of some sort. There is no local economy. There is a saloonand a museum, but the business district burned down in the 70's. Theold school house is the local meeting place. We held my parents 50thanniversary party there in the fall of 2000.
My grandparents arrived in the 1940's and it has been our home baseever since. My parents are retired and have their summer home inCherry Creek. We have the cabin I mentioned.
My grandmother is 93 and lives here in Elko now (we are about 145miles north of Cherry Creek). She couldn't remember where they gotthe books for the Biscuit Mining Company, but over the years she andmy grandpa purchased and sold many of the houses in town.
I'll keep in touch.

Hello Cliff and Lynne,
What a very interesting piece of history you have found! I do wish Iwas directly related to Barney. This would be such a wonderfuladdition. But, alas, I am not directly related except by long agomarriages between ancestors. I tried just now to trace thatrelationship back and it was indeed daunting. It is really a matterof forward and backward progression and centers on the fact of aMiddlemas/Walker marriage, then forwards to a Walker/Dalley marriageand then backwards to the Dalley connections with myHoyt/Haight/Hait/Hayt/Hoit line.
You might think that I am related to the McAllister line that figuresextensively with the Haight line, but no, McLeester didn't come fromMcAllister. My bonified ancestor was Simon Hoyte.
In any case, as the fact of the matter is that my websites are devotedto making as much information as I can available to help others findtheir roots, I would surely like to add what you have found toBarney's entry.
Even if no one makes a connection with him, it is a bit of Americanathat should be preserved.
So, what do you think? Will you allow me to add it along with a noteabout how and where you found this ledger?
Best regards,
Jill
