On page 326 & 327 of Volume I, we find the following:
"Hon. George Mygatt. This venerable gentleman, for many years aresident of Trumbull county, now residing in Cleveland, was born inDanbury, Connecticut, June 14, 1797. His parents were Comfort S. andLucy (Knapp) Mygatt, who were among the pioneers of Canfield, nowMahoning county. They came from Danbury to Ohio in the summer of1807, arriving in Canfield on the 7th day of July. Comfort S. Mygattwas engaged in mercantile business in Canfield some sixteen years.Soon after coming to Canfield he entered into partnership
with Herman Canfield and Zalmon Fitch, under the firm name of Mygatt,Canfield & Fitch, and opened a general store. The firm was dissolvedafter about two years, and the business was continued by Mr. Mygattduring the remainder of his life. He had been a member of theConnecticut Legislature before removing to Ohio. He died in October,1823.
George Mygatt obtained his education in the common school, but enjoyedvery limited advantages after the removal of the family to Ohio. Heentered the employ of the Western Reserve bank at Warren in 1818. Hecarried on a mercantile business in Warren for about five years; wascounty tax collector in the fall of 1821. He was elected sheriff ofTrumbull county in 1829, and re-elected in 1831, serving four years.He removed to Huron county in 1834, and was cashier of the Bank ofNorwalk, residing there about two years. He removed to Painesville,and was cashier of the Bank of Geauga county for ten years. In 1846he removed to Cleveland, where he now resides, and was subsequentlyelected president of the City bank of Cleveland, which position heheld four years. He was a member of the firm of Mygatt & Brown,private bankers in Cleveland six years. He was elected to theLegislature from Cuyahoga county in 1855, and served two years. From1857 to 1861 he was cashier of the Merchants' bank, of Cleveland; wasafterwards secretary and treasurer of the Cleveland & Mahoningrailroad company for six years, holding that position till February,1871, when he
retired from active business. This bare recital of facts in the lifeof Mr. Mygatt shows it to have been one of remarkable activity, andhis industry and activity have been attended with equal success. Hewas married in 1820 to Miss Eliza Freeman, daughter of Robert Freeman,one of the early settlers of Braceville township. Mrs. Mygatt wasborn in New York State April 28, 1797. This union was blessed withsix children, only one of whom survives, viz: Lucy, now widow ofFranklin T. Backus."
