Marty Smith sent the following from the "History of Trumbull andMahoning Counties, Ohio" published by H.Z. Williams & Bros.inCleveland, OH in 1882.
On page 313 of Volume I, we find the following:
"In 1807 there settled in Canfield a family, several members of whichafterwards became prominent in Warren business affairs. The head ofthis family was Comfort Mygatt. Accompanying the party fromConnecticut were three sons-in-law with their wives and families -Lewis Hoyt, Eli S. Bouton, and Elisha Whittlesey; eight daughters -Elizabeth, afterwards married to Zalmon Fitch of Warren; Lucy,afterwards wife of Asahel Adams, of Warren (the oldest lady living inthe city); and Maria, who died unmarried; Amanda, who married WilliamMcFarlane, of Warren; Eleanor, who married Allison Kent, of Canfield;Hannah, who married W. S. C. Otis, of Cleveland; Juliana, and Almira;three sons - George, Comfort, and Eli, and two step-sons, Jairus andHenry Stiles."
On page 18 of Volume II, we find the following:
"Comfort S. Mygatt, one of Canfield's earliest merchants, was bornAugust 23, 1763. About the 1st of June, 1807, from his home inDanbury, Connecticut, he dispatched a team consisting of two pair ofoxen and two horses, with a large wagon loaded with household goods,for Ohio. One week later he started with his family with four horsesand a fifth horse to hitch on when necessary, which was often thecase. He overtook the first team in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, andfrom there the two journeyed in company. On the fourth of July allwere in Pittsburg together, and on the 7th they arrived in Canfield,the first team having been five weeks on the road and the one whichbrought Mr. Mygatt and family four. The family, at the time of theirarrival, consisted of Mr. Mygatt and wife, four daughters, two sons,and two step-sons - ten persons in all. July 16, 1807, a son was born- Dr. Eli Mygatt, now an honored citizen of Poland. Soon afterreaching Canfield Mr. Mygatt entered into partnership with HermanCanfield and Zalmon Fitch, under the firm name of Mygatt, Canfield &
Fitch, and opened a store of dry goods, groceries, and generalmerchandise. The partnership was dissolved after about two years, andthe business was continued by Mr. Mygatt during the remainder of hislife. He died in October, 1823. In 1811 Mr. Mygatt and his wife rodeon horseback from Canfield to Danbury, but returned in a two-wheeledcarriage, driving one horse before the other. The journey, a distanceof five hundred and thirty miles, occupied eleven days."

[12916] The National Society of the Daughters of the American RevolutionVolume 10 p. 7, DAR ID # 9015 supplied first name. Eli Mygatt servedin civil life as well as in the militia. He turned out to defend theState in the Tryon invasion and his home was destroyed at the raid onDanbury. Data from the National Society of the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution Volume 29 p.194, DAR ID # 28531 states that Eliserved in the defense of Danbury, CT, his native place. He was amember of the Assembly twenty-three years; died during the session andwas buried with military honors. Data from the National Society of theDaughters of the American Revolution Volume 96, p. 244, DAR ID # 95752gave military rank. The National Society of the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution Volume 96 p. 244, DAR ID # 95752 gives birth anddeath places as well as dates.

"Dr. Eli Mygatt, physician, Poland, Mahoning county, was born inCanfield, Mahoning county, Ohio, July 16, 1807. His father wasComfort S. Mygatt, an early and prominent resident of Canfield, who isspoken of elsewhere. Dr. Mygatt, the subject of this brief sketch,has resided all his life in what is now Mahoning county. He studiedmedicine at Canfield with Dr. Fowler, who is still living, andattended the Western Medical college at New York, and has a diplomafrom the Cleveland Medical school. He has had an extensive practiceover the county in which he has resided for many years, beginning withDr. Kirtland, at Poland. Dr. Mygatt was married in 1831 to Miss LoisY. Kirtland, daughter of Jared Kirtland, of Poland, brother of JudgeKirtland, one of the earliest and most prominent of the pioneers ofthe Reserve. To Dr. Mygatt and wife were born six children - JaredP., Mary S., Sarah M., William L., Hannah O., and Lucy E. Lucy andMary only are living. Mrs. Mygatt died February, 1881. She was amember of the Presbyterian church, and a devoted Christian. Inpolitics Dr. Mygatt is a Republican."
