All data from McDowell. James W. Bonta moved with his parents toCato, Cayuga Co., NY from Jordan, Onondaga Co., NY 1843 having movedto Jordan from Marcellus, also in Onondaga Co., in 1836/7. He islisted in the 1855 census in Cato as a Mason with 3 apprentices.James was living in Meridian Village, Cato Township, Cayuga Co., NY in1854 according to the census. Page 292 of "The History of CayugaCounty, NY" by Elliott B. Storke, D. Mason & Company, Syracuse, NewYork 1789-1879 states under Town of Cato, Members of the Bar, " JamesW. Bonta, a native of this town, practiced here about a year about1856, in Justices' Court, but was never admitted to the Bar." He wasthe second person practicing law in the town." He served as anofficer and company commander in the 3rd New York Seward Artilleryduring the Civil War. He enlisted at age 34, August 26, 1862 atAuburn, Cayuga Co., NY; mustered in as a sargeant, Battery K to servethree years. He was captured at Beech Grove, NC February 2, 1864 andparoled March 7, 1864 at Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD. Life in the POWcamps was not pleasant. The Confederate government established apriority for exchange -- partisan rangers for troops captured by thepartisan rangers, which may have resulted in delays in the exchangeprocess. The exchange process involved a train ride from the POWcamp to the port at City Point, VA and then a steamer trip toMaryland. Troops being exchanged would be loaded for the return tripto Virginia. If the men were only paroled and did not already have anexchange, they had to wait at Camp Parole, MD until an exchange couldbe arranged. This was apparently the case for James. By 1863, thebarracks at the U. S. Naval Academy and St. John's College had becomebadly overcrowded, since Annapolis had become the most important depotfor paroled prisoners on the coast. As a result, a larger facilitynamed Camp Parole was built outside of Annapolis. At these facilities,Union prisoners paroled from Confederate prisons could get a bath, ashave, fresh clothing, and in some cases badly needed medicalattention. The soldiers would then stay at Camp Parole until theycould be either sent home or rejoin their regiments.
James was appointed first sargeant July 1, 1864 and commissioned as asecond lieutenant November 15 1864. He resigned April 26, 1865. Hewas commisioned a first lieutenant prior to leaving the Army, butnever seved in that rank. This unit was also known as the ThirdRegiment of Artillery (Light), Seward Artillery; Cayuga Regiment.Known by the synonyms of Seward Infantry; Cayuga Regiment; SewardArtillery; the regiment was organized at Elmira, New York, in theSpring of 1861, as the 19th NYSV Infantry. Originally the regiment wascomposed of 6 companies from Auburn, one from Seneca Falls, one fromWeedsport, and one from Union Springs. The regimental designation waschanged to the 3rd Regiment of Artillery on 11 December 1861.
The Third Regiment of Artillery served with Corps units in NC and SC,the 18th and 10th Corps respectively, and Batteries E, H, K and M inthe Army of the James from March 1862. The regiment took part in 61engagements, and mustered out at Syracuse, NY, in July, 1865, with anaggregate loss of 308.
His sword is engraved as Captain James W. Bonta. He and his wifepurchased three parcels of land in Meridian Village, Cato, Cayuga Co.,NY just after the end of the Civil War in Aug, Sep, and Oct, 1865.These are recorded in the Cayuga County Court House in Auburn, NY inDB 110 pg 399, DB 110 pg 578 and DB 111 pg 139. This property is atthe intersection of Bonta Bridge Road and Liberty Street and total 33acres. He lived next door to Daniel K. Shaw in the 1865 census ofMeridian Village. This house location is shown on the 1859 map as onthe south side of East Main Street (now route 370) in Meridian next tothe Eagle Hotel which was owned by Britt Shaw(A. B.). He sold a lotalong main street in Meridian August 7, 1855 as shown in DB 90 pg 630.James was listed as a kerosene oil dealer in the Cayuga Countydirectory in 1868 and 1869. James and Emiline sold their land inMeridian Sep 7, 1869 as shown in DB 126 pg 229. They moved to Erie,Pennsylvania and show up in 1870 as noted by the obituary for hisfather-in-law, Daniel K. Shaw who died at James's residence in Erie.Glen McDowell has a copy of the obituary from the Erie Gazette. He isalso in the 1870 census in Erie. There are no records of any landpurchases in the Erie Court House. James first shows up in thePhiladelphia City Directory in 1878, the year his daughter Newell Maygot married in Philadelphia. His address in Philadelphia was 1930North 13th Street from 1878 until 1885. His address from 1886 until1889 was 2020 North 17th Street. In 1890 , his address was 1600Diamond Street. At the time of his death in 1905 his address was2528 West Diamond Street. His occupation in the City directory variesfrom Mining, telephones, to furnace. He is called James W. Bonta,Esq. in the announcement of his daughter's wedding. He was alsorecorded living in Philadelphia in 1880 according to census records.He remarried Francis Morgan upon the death of his first wife EmilineShaw. He was an electrician and inventor who made importantcontributions to the telephone accord to a genealogy publicationwritten in 1936..
His death certificate lists his occupation as a contractor. He diedof gastritis. His funeral was held at his home. He was buried Nov7, 1905 at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.
