The Gorham Family History by Gerald J. Parsons
John Tilley, his wife and daugter Elizabeth, sailed for the New Worldin the "Mayflower" in 1620. His English home has not been found andthe name of his wife is not known with certainty. John Tilley signed the celebrated Matflower Compact, being 16th of the41 signers. He was a member of the shallop on 16 Dec 1620, which hadthe first encounter with the Indians on 18 Dec, and which thereaftermade the historic landing on the rock at Plymouth. His wife died atPlymouth in the first general sickness after 11 Jan, early in 1621.He died at Plymouth between 11 Jan and 10 Apr 1621.

Richard More and Henry Samson were young boys and did not sign theCompact. Both have descendents.
After a difficult voyage in Nov 1620, the Mayflower anchored at CapeCod, north of the limits of the Virginia Colony, and beyond anyorganized law. Some form of government was necessary. Those whointended to settle here at Cape Cod comprised two separate groups: thereligious dissenters from England and Holland, and those who hoped tobetter themselves in this new Colony. Differences of opinion hadarisen between these groups on the voyage. These differences had to bereconciled if the colony was to survive.
Therefore, on Nov 21, 1620, in the "Great Cabin" aboard the Mayflower,forty-one male passengers composed a written document, which was avow, a pledge, a word of honor that all who signed it, as well astheir families promised to abide by its proclamation.
The settlers lived up to the Compact they signed. It brought thedivergent groups into one unified group, and the Compact remained asthe Constitution of the Colony until Plymouth was merged into theMassachusetts Bay Colony by order of King William and Queen Mary.
