John Howland came on the "Mayflower" in 1620 as a servant to JohnCarver, the first governor. The word servant in that day meant anemployee and not necessarily a person of a mean social position. Hewas a man of outstanding character, a magistrate and one of thedistinguished leaders of the Colony. During the voyage across theAtlantic, John Howland was almost drowned when a mountainous waveswept him overboard. By the 11 Nov. 1620, he had sufficientlyrecuperated from his oceanic adventure to be the 13th signer of theMayflower Compact. He was a member of the third expedition which leftthe "Mayflower" in the shallop on 16 Dec. 1620, which participated inthe first encounter with the Indians on 18 Dec. 1620, at what waslater Eastham, and which landed on the rock at Plymouth and selectedthat spot as the permanent settlement. both Governor and Mrs. Carverdied during the first few months of the struggle for survival atPlymouth, and it is believed that John Howland inherited John Carver'sestate, as the Carvers had no children of their own. He was anAssistant or member of the Governor's Council of Plymouth Colony in1633, 1634 and 1635 and from 1641 to 1670 was frequently a Deputy tothe General Court. Because of his liberality to the Quakers he wasdropped as deputy to the General court in 1659 and 1660, but in 1661he was reelected and served until 1670.
In 1634 Howland commanded the Pilgrim's Trading Post at Kennebec(Maine). In the preparations for the Pequot War Howland was one ofthose appointed to arrange for Plymouth's share. In 1638 John andElizabeth Howland moved to what was called Rocky Nook, at that time apart of Plymouth Colony but now within the borders of Kingston, Mass.Here John Howland passed the last years of his life.
