"Jonas Weed (I) is identified as coming to America with the 1630"Winthrop/Saltonstall Fleet"; arrived and settled at Watertown,Middlesex Co., MA on Jun. 14, 1630. On May 6, 1635 a group ofdissidents with the Church (Puritan Congregational) were granted byrequest to remove to Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT. In about1641/42, Jonas and his family, removed to Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT.to join the (Rev.) Richard Denton Group who had removed to that placein 1641. Jonas was not part of the original Denton Group that settledStamford.
While at Wethersfield, Jonas owned property and resided at thenorthern end of High Street on the eastern side. While there heappears on the first list of the first Jury recorded in PublicRecords. He was, therefore, a founder of two towns (Watertown, MA andWethersfield, CT) and a settler at Stamford in its second year ofexistence.
His wife, Mary's, surname has not been determined though in thebooklet "Stamford's First Settlers" she is proclaimed to be a Hoytdaughter and in the Family of Linnie Fay Rockwell by H. Earl Close(1994) the author indicated "possibly a Hoyt or Scofield. Proof ofany identification is not stated.
Mary was not a daughter of Simon Hoyt as it is known that Simon'sdaughter Mary married the Widower Thomas Lyon. Other Hoyt daughtersbearing the name Mary are accounted for. In the absence ofcontemporary documented record, for the purposes of this writing, sheis considered to be of unknown ancestry. Some believe her name to beMary Jane Davidson but again without evidence.
Jonas and Mary's daughter, Sarah, has had erroneous accounts publishedthat she married David Waterbury and Nathaniel Pond. No record of herdeath or any marriages have been identified. David Waterbury, son ofJohn and Rose Waterbury, married Sarah Newman and Sarah Weed, daughterof Daniel and Ruth Weed.
Some believe that the unidentified child was named Ruth. While this ispossible, no record known, identifies such. According to Stamford, CTTown Records the entry reads "a child of Jonas Weed (I), died Jul. 15,1656".
His Will is dated Nov. 26, 1672 and was written in the third personsingular; Inventory -
Jun. 5, 1676, by Richard Laws and Francis Bell. The inventory of thewidow's estate was taken and sworn to at Stamford, CT. on Mar 10,1689/90, by her son, Jonas (II) and taken by Abraham Ambler and DanielScofield.
There is only one Deed recorded at Stamford, CT in which Jonas Weed(I) is named as principal. On Aug. 14, 1671 he gave to his son,"Jonas Weed (Jr. or II)" signed by Jonas Weed (I) and witnessed byJohn Holly and Daniel Weed.
No specific record of birth for any of his children has ever beenfound, at Wethersfield or Stamford, CT though some writings make claimto the contrary and without documentary evidence cited for the claim."
