Four Perish in Blaze - Oklahoma Fire Kills Two Kansas City Truckers,W.J. Ellingsworth, Jr., and C.H. Strope had stopped at service station- static electricity is blamed.
Pryor, Oklahoma, November 14. - Two Kansas City men died last night ina sudden fire, apparently started by static electricity from one oftwo trucks being fueled at a service station here.
The victims were William J. Ellingsworth, Jr. 27 years old, 4639 EastNinth Street, Kansas City, and Cecil H. Strope. Both were truckdrivers for the Jack Cooper Transport Company, Inc., 3936 EwingAvenue, Kansas City.
A Native Missourian.
Company officials said today that Strope was a native of Montrose,Mo., and had been living in Kansas City since taking up employmentwith the firm in 1947. His home address was not immediatelyavailable. The towering flames also burned another man to death,caused the death of a fourth person, and injured another. A $100,000touring show exhibit was damaged. The third dead man was William D.Odle, Pryor, an attendant at the service station. Doc Griffin, ofPensacola, OK., who suffered burns, died in a hospital a few hoursafter the fire. He managed ot escape from the building during theblaze. Ed Hamilton, owner of the station suffered severe cuts andbruises. Carl Drake of Columbus, Ohio, driver of the truck housingthe $100,000 exhibits of Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not show, said heescaped through a small opening in the window of the service station.Those who burned to death were trapped inside the station. Drake saidhe believed the fierce blaze was caused by static electricity from oneof the trucks parked in the driveway of the station. Drake's truckand part of the exhibit were damaged.
Heavy Truck Damage.
The truck owned by the Cooper company was damaged extensively by theflames. Stope was the driver of the truck, which carried new cars,and Ellingsworth was his helper on the trip. They were returning toKansas City from Dallas, Texas, company officials said, and wereinside the station while the truck was being serviced. Ellingsworthhad been an employee of the Cooper firm since 1946. He was born inKansas City and had lived there all his life. He attended CentralHigh School in Kansas City. Ellingsworth leaves his wife, LorettaEllingsworth, and a 5-month old daughter, Sharon Ellingsworth, both ofthe home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Ellingsworth, 3715Fremont Avenue, and two brothers, Robert Lee Ellingsworth, 809 CypressAvenue, and Jack Ellingsworth, 3835 Fremont, all of Kansas City.

William J. Ellingsworth, 84, of 3715 Fremont, died Friday (July 11,1975) at the Osteopathic Center. Mr. Ellingsworth was born in Aurora,Missouri, and had lived here about 60 years. He was a retired foremanfor the old City Ice and Fuel Company. He leaves his wife, Mrs. EdithA. Ellingsworth of the home; two sons, Robert L. Ellingsworth, 528Crescent, Independence, and Jack E. Ellingsworth, 7622 E. 52nd; threesisters, Mrs. Martha Johnson, Mrs. Lillian McDowell and Mrs. CeliaSwartz, all of Aurora; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Earp Truman Road Chapel;burial in the Brooking Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonightat the chapel.

[1324] All data from Cochran. In his Civil War service he joined and wasdischarged the same dates as his brother, Robert, but they may havebeen in different companies of the same cavalry division. One mustassume that their politics and beliefs led them to leave Arkansas asthey were from Yankee states originally, but William moved back toArkansas. He left his wife of 30+ years, (around Apr 3 1898,according to Sarah's application for William's pension) for somereason, and lived briefly in Lawrence Co., Mo. before moving back toArkansas, where he re-filed for his veteran's pension. William andSarah had another son who died at 3 years of age. According to the1910 MO census, Sarah is listed as a mother to 9, with 8 still alive.
