Data from Hicks and from Hoyt's Issue Fall 1990 which states she was afullblood Cherokee.
In an email dated Jan 20, 2003, Pat Jones tells us the following:
"I was looking through your Lineage pages, on Gendex, and noticed youhave many Cherokee family references: Your reference to the CherokeeWard family shows:
Cherokee: (Irish descent) Catherine McDaniel married John Jack Ward(son of Bryant)
b c 1763 d. after 1825, Indian Territory
Sons included James Ward, Sr. (which I take it is one of yourancestors) and George Ward, Sr. who was my very great grandfather.
I was concerned about the entries for Catherine's parents: Her motherwas: Grunny Hopper , born c 1745, Cherokee Nation. married to:William David McDaniel, Scots trader - the Indians
called them "Scotch". He named his wife, Grunuaille(gaelic/celt),i.e.Grace (English) and short is Grunny, hard to pronounce; it's morelike "grahny".
For years, and in many books, her name is given as Granny; in English, that's short for grandmother. But unless you know Gaelic and who does?- it's short for Grunuaille; Grace.
The fascinating part of this history is that she was the daughter (weknow of only one other child, a son) of the famous Chief, principallythe diplomat, Kanagautko (unpronounceable), Standing Turkey the Elder;written up as Old Hop, since he had a crippled foot, probably from thechildhood disease of polio. His wife is given as Sugi/Suki. (No onecould ever pronounce the Cherokee names, but the Indians.)
Did you ever come upon the tragic story of James Ward, Jr.'s (mycousin) death and that of his wife Esther Hoyt Ward.? (She would beyour cousin?) It was a common event in the Civil War.
The story puts much more into history than a name listed on a roster.
My roster and the histories are given in my gedcom on Ancestry.comnow. My number is 2114510; and is best accessed by entering GrunnyHopper's name on the search box. Everyone else continues to use the"Granny" thing, for reference.
Regards, Pat Mechling (Mrs. Darryl Jones)
