Lafayette Durgan, great grand father of Theodore L Durgan, was bornin Rensselaer, New York in 1830. He went with his family to Rosco,IL. He was a teamster and prune farmer.
In 1854 he walked cross the plains with nothing but a switch in hishand leading a team of oxen across the Oregon Trail while mom and dadrode in the wagon, heading for Oregon Territory. They arrived at FortVancouver in the Fall of 1854 when he was 24 years of age.
The family camped at Burnt Bridge Creek for the Winter. The placebecame his father's homestead. His father was Joseph E. C. Durgin,son of Zebulon and Lettice Stillson Durgin of Durham, NH who hadmarried (1) Martha Porter (2)Judy Nancy Rowland of NY.
Lafayette took up homestead in the Spring of 1855 at Prune Hill, northof the Columbia River and the west end of Lady's Island . He had hisfirst prune orchard on Prune Hill. He married in 1861 a native ofOregon Territory, Catherine Boardwell who was born 1846 at ColumbiaCity, Oregon Territory,. She was married at age 15. They had 11Children. Both are buried in Washougal Cemetery, Washougal, WA.
