George Durgan:: Born in The Sticks of Clark County, Washington.Raised in The Sticks. Lived
in The sticks. Alway made do with what he had.. Never had electricityuntil he was 60 years old.
He was a horse farmer and raised horses for the US Cavalry. He knewmore about draft horses than anybody I ever knew !
He never went to school but could write his name. He owned thefinest teams of horses In Clackamas County. He hired out to pull theroad grader with horses for the county roads when they were dirt. Hewas County road boss before WWI for north Clackamas County, SunnysideDistrict.
In WW I, my father and he plowed with horses the 80 acre ClackamasTownCenter and sowed it in grain. And sold it to the Goverment to makemush to feed the troops. My father made enough to buy a Model T Fordin 1918 the first one with an electric starter. He owned 5 in hislife time. I learned to drive in one over 50 years ago.
George was a wood cutter and was clearing the land for the farm. Hewould haul wood to Portland with horse and wagon. In Winter time themud was so deep on the road they would throw half of it in the mudjust to get through with horse and wagon.
He died in 1942 and is buried in Sunnyside Pioneer Cemetery, ClackamasCounty, Oregon.
My father and mother are buried beside him. I don't Know of anythingworse than have to dig a grave by hand to bury your family.
His was the first furneral I ever went to. I never will forget it.Since then I have been to more than I can count <>Ted<>
