It is a cold morning but no rain. In fact the weather has been goodfor this time of year. It's 5 AM in the morning. A boy of 14 rollsout of bed eager to get the day started. There is no hot water untillthe kitchen stove heats the copper coils going to the water tank. There is no electricity. There is running water though for there is aFairbanks Morse hit and miss engine running an air powered pump in ahand dug well, one of the first running water systems in Clackamas. The pump was shipped around the Horn from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, theonly one like it on the West Coast.
For today he and his father will start plowing the 80 Acres in what isnow the Clackamas Town Center. The chores are done and the boyharnesses the horses. He brings the horses around to the wagon thathas a plow loaded on it. He shouts a command "Back" and gives aslight tug on the rein. The horses are well trained and back intoa double tree on the wagon. The snaps are hooked and the boy climbsaboard. He clicks to the horses "Gitty Up" and sends a sleightquiver down the reins.
He is on his way: My father was one of the best teamsters in thecountry. He started working horses when he was big enough to walk.At the field the plow is unloaded and hooked up to the horses. Theboy's eyes scan the field and his mind records every thing he sees, for he is picking out a target at the other end of the field 1/4 mileaway. When he gets there the furrow will be as straight as an arrow. He clicks to the horses and the plow digs deep.
He shouts' 'Whoa". The horses stop. He walks over and picks up ahand full of dirt. He rolls it into
a ball, crushes it between his fingers, the moisture is perfect,, Theplow digs deep untill it hits a hackle berry root. The plow jumps, the handles smack the boys ribcage turning it black and blue formonths. He comes to the end of the field , '' Haw'' shouts the boyand throws the plow on its side. He crosses the end of the field andstarts back again.
This is a scene that will be repeated day after day all spring, andfor the next 10 years. They will sow spring grain for a govermentcontract to feed the Troops In World War I. And Father will makeenough money to buy his first Model T Ford in 1918 with electricstarter. A car that I learned to drive in.
Those old timers were tough. If you ever plowed with horses and hadto wrestle a plow you know what I mean. I plowed many a day with atractor and even that was too much work for me. 12 hours a day overrough ground really beats you up. There had to be a better way tomake a living, so I left the farm and went to work in town,, Ted, hisson

For the last 50 or more years I have been chasing the Durgin familyhistory all over the world. A very historic family to say the least.
I was born on the family farm in Sunnyside District, Clackamas, Oregonon Apr 6 1938.
In 1954 me and my brother went to work for The Rock Of Ages dealersetting monuments in grave yards all over Oregon, Washington,California and Idaho. We have worked in just about every cemetery inthree States. We used to search for monuments of famous people to seeif there were any buried there. That started me looking for ancestersof mine and other people, been at it ever since.
I wish to thank all the Durgins and their relatives that have madethis such an adventure and
very confusing for the last 50 or so years.
