Data from McLeester. HHH gives only middle initial. Birth date givenfrom HHH and also supplied by George L. Hoyt. Death date also given bysame and ties to original newspaper clipping of his obituary in mypossession.
"A gloom has been cast upon the members of the Fire Department by thedeath of STEPHEN T. HOYT, Assistant Engineer. Mr. Hoyt died on Friday,17th inst., aged 37 years. He was an active and hardworking Fireman, and universally respected.
For some time before he expired he laid in a lethargy, but the bell onthe Twenty-second street tower striking an alarm appeared to arousehim: he counted the district with his fingers, and then his spiritfled into another and happier sphere.
Mr. Hoyt, was formerly Foreman of Hudson Engine Company 1, when shelaid at the foot of Duane street, and afterwards Foreman of HudsonHose Company No. 21, and was elected Assistant Engineer in March,1850. The zeal with which Mr. Hoyt has discharged his duties as aFireman has tended greatly to shorten his life.
The funeral took place on Sunday, and was attended by the FireDepartment.
The services were performed at St. Mark's Church, and his remainstaken to Greenwood. The procession presented a very solemn appearanceas it moved through the streets, each man seemed to feel that he hadmet with an irreparable loss."
Debbie Breton had a wonderful site containing much information aboutthe New York City Fire department at her site located athttp://members.aol.com/dcbreton/index.html that contains moreinformation about Stephen, Sr. and Jr. That site is now longer (Feb5, 2003) available. I purchased a reprint of the book Debbie used tocreate her index. This publication is "Birth of the Bravest A Historyof the New York Fire Department from 1609 to 1887" by A. E. Costelloand was published by Tom Doherty Associates of NY, NY Sep. 2002.This version is an abbreviation of Costello's original "Our Firemen: AHistory of the New York Fire Departments", first published in 1887.The abridgement copyright is held by Brian M. Thomsen.
On page 112 of this book is listed:

{I have not proven that these two Hoyt fellows are mine, partlybecause of the calculated age of the younger Stephen which makes hisbirth year as 1841 rather than 1838. However, given that they wereboarders in the establishment of one Mary Timpson, I would speculatethat this obvious father and son were boarding with the elderStephen's wife's sister-in-law.
