In an email dated Feb. 28, 2003, Dad responded to my request to tellme how he decided to go into the priesthood. Here is what he wrote,at age 85.
"Hey again. I will try to answer your first question about how I gotinto the priesthood.
I was working at the Navy Base in PC (Panama City, FL) with that hughcomputer. It concerned mine warfare defense systems. I operated thecomputer for the team at night so they could see the results of theirprograms in the morning. While this big behemoth was clanking away Iwould read things. At the time Barnum McCarty was the rector at St.Andrews (Episcopal Church, Panama City, FL) and we were quite goodfriends. He suggested that I think about going into the ministry andI thought he was crazy.
Mom was still smoking at the time and I had quit in 1955 before I hadmy kidney removed for papilllary cancer. Her smoking didn't bother meuntil about 1968 or 69. I mentioned it her a few times. The smell inher hair and clothes and the house was starting to get to me. Shealways (said) that she enjoyed smoking and that she could quit anytime she wanted. Of course we both knew she couldn't. So I decidedto relocate.
I was not thinking of divorce, just getting away from the situation.I applied to several openings in the computer field in the Navy atdifferent locations. Before I could go for an interview I would get aletter back that the job that I applied for was abolished. Thathappened about five times. I got the message that I was not in chargeof leaving Wenonah or PC. So I talked to Barnum and he suggested thatI attend a Friday night prayer group. I did and after a time Wenonahtried to stop smoking. We had quite a time with it but in a shortwhile after much agony she quit.
I took that as a sign that I should seriously consider Barnum'sthought about going to seminary. Things began to jell and after I wasinterviewed by Bishop West and others - psychiatrists, psychologists, and the like. We moved to Lexington, KY and I went to ETSKY(Episcopal Theological Seminary in KY), in 1970 and graduated in 1973.I begin my ministry as a Deacon and was ordained a Priest in 1974.
Does that tell you what you want to know? God used cigarettes as ameans of getting me. I guess without knowing what was happening Iused them to get God. I had a strong urging to serve in some way andthat turned out to be as a priest. OK?"
Yes, Dad, that is more than OK. Thank you! Jill
The Rev. John H. McLeester served as Rector 1976-81 (Saint BarnabasEpiscopal Church
South Brunswick, New Jersey) during a time of great liturgical changein the church; under his leadership the 1979 Book of Common Prayer andthe practice of celebrating the Holy Eucharist every Sunday wasintroduced.
