Data from McLeester. According to Essie Mae Paul Swearingen, he wascalled Fed and his given name was spelled as given here. Data fromThe Swearingen Family Tree by Gary Swearingen and Deborah SwearingenDaniels, 1994, gives the following account. "The story of FredrickGreen that was passed down through the family was that he was killedat the Battle of Marianna, Florida during the Civil War, althoughfacts do not support this. The Battle of Marianna took place Sept. 27,1864. The Confederates listed 81 soldiers as missing. Fredrick Greenwould have been 33 years old. A search of the Jackson Co., FLmortality records shows Fredrick Green died Aug. 1860 at the age of 28of "the chills". This is four years before the Battle of Marianna wasfought.
Maybe one reason for the story is the birthdates of Louisa's children.2 of her 3 children were born after the death of Fredrick Green. MaybeLouisa wanted the children to think of their father as a hero and notquestion why he died so young. Whatever the reason, if the dates arecorrect Fredrick Green could have only fathered one to the threelisted children.
On the 1880 census of Jackson Co. in one household is found:
Louisa L. Sweairngen, Head of house age 46, widowed and occupationfarmer, listed as born in AL. She could read and write. Her mother andfather are listed as being from SC.
Charoltte Swearingen, age 11 born 1869, single daughter of Louisa;could not read or write.
James Fredrick Green Swearingen, age 21 born 1858, oldest son ofLouisa, single, occupation laborer; could not read or write.
S.O. Ray, born 1800, age 80, mother of Louisa; widowed; crippled andmentally incompetent; born in SC as well as her mother and father.
Mary Ray, age 40 born 1840, sister of Louisa, single; occupationlaborer; could read but not write; born in AL.
K. Swales, female age 50 born 1830; sister of Louisa; widowed;occupation laborer; could not read or write.
Tobe W. Swearingen, age 16, born 1864, living in the household ofJames H. Harper as an employee/laborer; could not read or write; hedied in Bay Co., FL
The 1885 Census lists Louisa's occupation as sewing. She was 52 yearsold."

Firefighter 'angels' earn wings
DAVID ANGIER
The News Herald
Edward Brooks fought back tears Friday and thanked his angels forsaving his life. The angels squirmed a little under the attention.
Panama City firefighters Gary Swearingen, David Bronson and Lt. GaryClark dragged an almost dead Brooks from a burning Marie Motel roomthree weeks ago. All three downplayed their roles in the rescue, saying it was a team effort and all a part of the job.
"They're shy," said Assistant Chief Gary Wells. "But all of them, everybody involved, knows they did a good job."
Clark found Brooks through thick smoke slumped over the bathtub ofRoom 28 just after midnight Feb. 5. The room was destroyed by fire butthe bathroom and Brooks were saved when Brooks closed himself inside.
"I would say he was in pretty bad shape when we got to him," Clarksaid. "He barely had a pulse when I found him."
Clark radioed out for help. The bathroom was so small that when thesecond firefighter burst in, the edge of the door cut open Clark'shead. As Bronson and Clark were trying to maneuver Brooks out of theroom Swearingen arrived to help.
Bronson said the door was such a problem he eventually tore it off itshinges and threw it aside, "there wasn't much left of it by thatpoint."
Bronson figured they were pulling out a dead man, he said.
"Then he made a gurgling noise and we knew he was alive," he said."That's when the adrenaline kicked in."
Swearingen and Clark carried Brooks and Bronson led them through thesmoke to the front door. Once outside they began CPR and rushed Brooksto the hospital. Brooks was released a few days ago from Bay MedicalCenter.
He arrived Friday at the Central Fire Station on U.S. Business 98 alittle out of breath, a lingering result of the enormous amount ofsmoke he inhaled.
Despite losing his home and temporarily forced out of work because ofhis lungs, Brooks bought an angel pin for each man who physicallydragged him from that burning room. He thanked the others whosuppressed the fire or pumped the water to the team inside the room.
"I owe my life to you guys," he said. "I don't know what I can ever doto repay you. But you have a lifetime supply guaranteed coming fromthis heart," tapping his chest.
The pins came with a small poem that expressed Brooks' feelings.Swearingen said he would put his up in his locker.
"I'd hate to see anybody with their lives in danger like that,"Swearingen said. "It humbles you and makes you realize how preciouslife is."
Brooks said he can hardly control his emotions when he thinks abouthis rescue. He said he burst into tears recently at a grocery storethinking about it. "People were looking at me like I was crazy," hesaid.
Brooks said he didn't want to sound like a preacher but he has foundreligion since the fire.
"I just want to thank God that they were there," he said. "I don'twant to sound like the Rev. Jesse Jackson or anything, but I just wantto thank God and those three guys in there."
Clark said he knows that Brooks "would have perished if we hadn't gotthere as fast as we did," but he doesn't think he did anything morethan just his job.
"If you want to know, I'm really embarrassed about it," he said."That's my job. I had eight guys with me. If everybody wasn't doingtheir job it wouldn't have clicked."
