Data from McLeester. There was another child in this family who diedat 3 months of age. Data from The Swearingen Family Tree by GarySwearingen and Deborah Swearingen Daniels, 1994, lists his holdings in1884 as well as the value of these. "He had 9 acres of tilled landand pasture combined over 150 acresof woodland and forest. Fences andbuildings were worth $60.00, farm equipment $3.00, livestock $30.00and fertilizer $5.00. The money made from farming in 1884 was $50.00.No horses were owned. He owned 10 swine and 12 chickens which produced25 dozen eggs. He produced 8 bushels of crowder peas and 35 baskets ofbeans. On 1 1/4 acres he produced 75 bushels of sweet potatoes.
The 1900 census shows that James had learned to read and to writealthough he still had no formal education. His land amount had grownfrom 150 acres to 160 acres and now was worth $320.00 and he owned hisfarm outright.
In 1906-07 Compass Lake in Jackson Co. became incorporated. "JacksonCounty Florida, A History" lists C. L. Calhoun as Mayor with JamesFredrick Swearingen.
In 1912 James was crippled when a tree fell on him during a loggingaccident. He had to be pulled around on a sled to oversee his farm. His death certificate states he was an invalid the last 20 years ofhis life."
Note from McLeester - his death certificate gives his surname asSwearingain which is phonetically the way his son Chester pronouncedthe name.
