His obituary from the Springfield News-Leader - March 15, 2001
POINT LOOKOUT, MO - M. Graham Clark, who guided the College of theOzarks as it grew from a high school to a four-year college, diedThursday morning with friends and family at his side in his quarterson the campus. He was 92.
The small, dapper man with a black patch over one eye came to theSchool of the Ozarks in 1946. During his tenure as president, the highschool became a junior college and later a four-year collegerecognized nationally for its adherence to Christian principles andstudents’ work ethic.
"Given his tremendous accomplishments, it’s easy to see why he wascalled "wizard of the Ozarks," said C of O President Jerry Davis. "Heliked the title, but when I’d call him that he’d always say, ‘Oh, I’mnot a wizard.’".
Clark earned that nickname because of his tireless efforts to raisefunds, producing a generous endowment from which the school continuesto benefit.
"He was one great person," said longtime friend Seth Caperton, who wasClark’s pilot for many years. "In my opinion, if it weren’t for him,we wouldn’t have a College of the Ozarks."
Clark’s health failed this winter, C of O spokeswoman Camille Howellsaid. He received blood transfusions to bolster his weakened immunesystem, but his condition gradually worsened in the past few weeks.Even that didn’t keep the ordained Presbyterian minister fromparticipating in campus activities.
Last week during the NAIA-II basketball tournament at the college,Clark, from a wheelchair, tossed out the ceremonial first ball for thegame in which C of O played.
Clark knew he didn’t have long to live, said Chuck Zehnder, dean ofcampus ministries.
About two months ago, after a visit to his doctor, Clark confided thathe had overheard the doctor telling his daughter that he wouldprobably only live two or three months.
"Then he looked up at the ceiling and raised his hands in the air andsaid ‘Hallelujah,’" Zehnder said. "He was confident of hisrelationship with Christ. He had nothing to fear in death."
Clark had something else on his mind before he died, Davis said.
"I reassured Dr. Clark, because he asked me about it, that there wouldbe no philosophical departure for this college," Davis said. "I madethat commitment to him."
Clark, who almost always in public wore a suit and tie, relished hislife on campus. He said he had no regrets about selling his homeoverlooking Table Rock Lake to move into a spacious apartment oncampus.
Clark sold the home to John L. Morris, owner of Bass Pro Shops. It’snow the site of Top Of The Rock restaurant and golf course.
"Johnny’s ecology-minded," Clark said. "He wants to keep it beautifulhere. When I first came here, it was dark outside at night. Now youcan read a newspaper at night by the lights from Branson."
Clark was a leader in many organizations and won dozens of awards forhis service. He also loved to fly; in 1999, he was inducted into theAmelia Earhart International Forest of Friendship, joining about 800other distinguished men and women.
Clark said he felt he didn’t deserve the accolade.
"The glory goes to God," Clark said. "God did it."
Even in the most dire circumstances, Clark never lost his sense ofhumor and optimism, said Jan Hoynacki who worked for Clark at thecollege for nearly 30 years.
In the 1980s, Clark got cancer and had to have an eye removed. When hewas in the hospital waiting to go into surgery, Hoynacki said, thedoctors asked him if he would like to speak to the hospital chaplain.
"That would be fine," Clark said. "If he needs help, I’ll be glad tosee him."
