A biographical sketch appeared in Hoyt'sIssue, Spring 1989, p 464 submitted by Judith Burkhardt with sourceslisted as HHH p 601 and Portrait & Biographical Records of Adams Co.,IL, 1892. Paraphrased: William was educated at the common schools ofNew York, and at the age of 16 began to earn his own livelihood as hisfather was in limited circumstances. The family immigrated to AdamsCo. in 1843 and settled on section 2, North East Township. Williamowned 300 acres and a home of 12 rooms. The cost of the constructionof the home was $4000 and was one of the finest dwellings in thecommunity. He was offered $20,000 for the farm but would not accept.William and Abigail were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.William served as Recording Steward for 26 years, was Librarian,Trustee and since 1881 had been Superintendent of the Sunday School.He was a Republican and served as Clerk of the township for 20 years,Supervisor for 7 years and Collector.
