All data from McDowell. Thomas Dimmock is buried in Barnstable,Barnstable, MA. The burial place of Thomas Dimmock is not marked by astone. In 1939, during a tercentenary celebration of the town ofBarnstable, a stone was erected in honor of Thomas Dimmock. It islocated about one mile east of Barnstable County Courthouse. A bronzetablet on a natural boulder reads:
"This Boulder is Erected as a Memorial to Elder Thomas Dimmock whowith Rev. Joseph Hull Received the Charter for the Land Now Occupiedby the Town of Barnstable. On This Knoll He Built a FortificationHouse in 1643."
Barnstable Tercentenary 1939; born circa 1600 in England; Thomas is ofuncertain parentage. It is theorized that he was the son of EdwardDymoke of Pinchbeck, England, and baptized 7 Oct 1604, possibly inPinchbeck. This line is referred to in several sources, none of whichoffers references or documented vital statistics to lock him in as adescendant of this family.
Through this line, Thomas would be a descendant of the Dymokes ofScrivelsby, King's and Queen's Champions of England, and also of theEnglish royal line through Edward III; married Anne before 1635 inEngland; died between 1657 and 4 Jun 1658 in Barnstable, Barnstable,MA.
He was found on a passenger list on 8 May 1635 in Weymouth, England;Thomas is listed among the passengers of the Hopewell (John Driver,Master) as "Thomas Demick, wife and family." The destination was"Mahachuselest Bay in New England." On 11 Nov 1635 in Dorchester,Norfolk, MA, the following appears in the town records: "It is orderedthat ... Mr. Demicke ... (among others, five in all) or any two ofthem shall have power to lay out an hundred and fifty acres of medowto Mr. Israel Stoughton." To this, a footnote was added that "ThomasDimmock was a selectman this year."
After Jan 1636 in Scituate, Plymouth, MA it is said that Thomasremoved to Scituate, MA. A Dimmock descendant researched thepublications dealing with this town and stated that not much mentionwas made of him here. Some reports say that Thomas was in Scituate aslate as 1638.
On 4 Jan 1635/36 in Dorchester, Norfolk, MA Dorchester Town Recordsshow "It is ordered that the p'tyes here under written shall havegreat lotts at the bounds, betwixt Roxbury and Dorchester, at thegreat hill, betwixt said bounds, and above the marsh as foll. not toinclose medowe." Among those listed is "Mr. Demicke 20 acres." On 18Feb 1635/36 in Dorchester, Norfolk, MA, "The names of those which havemedow granted them, the 18th ffebru:1635 ... in the fresh marshnearest the Towne ... ffirst March" is "Mr. Dimocke 2 acres." On 25May 1636 in Dorchester, Norfolk, MA, Thomas was created a freeman. On27 Jun 1636 in Dorchester, Norfolk, MA, "A meeting of 12 men, formerlychosen by the Plantation for ordering the affayres thereof, whosenames are under written." Among those listed are "Mr. Demicke." On 5Jul 1636 in Dorchester, Norfolk, MA, "Mr. Democke ... shall have allthe ground between his pale and Gooman Denslow, and Bartholomew theside of the highway, provided he prejudice not the way for Carts,Cattle and passengers, but mayntayne a Cart, Gate, bothe the uplandand the marsh not formerly granted."
In 1637 in Hingham, Plymouth, MA, Thomas is listed as a settler inHingham, MA along with the ancestors of Abraham Lincoln. However, notmuch is known about Thomas in Hingham.
In 1639 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Thomas removed to Barnstable,MA, taking up permanent residence there. He was probably one of theoriginal associates of Richard Collicut, along with Reverand JosephHull, Mr. John Lothrop, and Mr. John Bursley of Weymouth. Elder ThomasDimmock and Rev. Joseph Hull were the parties named in the grant madein 1639 of the lands in the town of Barnstable. On 5 Mar 1639 inBarnstable, Barnstable, MA, The Colony Court appointed Thomas to"exercise the Barnstable men in their arms," no doubt to protect theremote settlement from attacks by Indians. On 14 Jun 1639 inBarnstable, Barnstable, MA, Grants of land in Barnstable were made toThomas Dimmock and others. The town records describe "the grant of agreat lot to Thomas Dimmick with meadow adjoining at a Little RunningBrook at ye East End of the plantation towards Yarmouth." The landconsisted of a 75-acre area that was triangular in shape, and whichincluded uplands and meadows. In Dec 1639 in Barnstable, Barnstable,MA, Thomas was a deputy to the Plymouth Colony Court. He served thisrole again in June 1640, June 1641, June 1642, October 1643, June1648, and June 1650. On 3 Dec 1639 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA,Thomas was admitted as a freeman to the Plymouth Colony.
On 2 Jun 1640 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, The first court wasestablished in Barnstable County. Thomas Dimmock of Barnstable, JohnCrow of Yarmouth, and Edmund Freeman of Sandwich were appointed to"hear and determine all causes and controversies within the threetownships not exceeding twenty shillings, according to the formerorder of the Court." In 1642 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, PlymouthColony instructed all of their districts to build fortificationhouses, to protect the inhabitants from sudden attacks by Indians.Thomas Dimmock, along with others, got the people together and builtthe first fortification house. The lower story of the house was builtof stone, and the upper story overhung the walls of the first storyfor additional protection. In 1939, a tablet was erected on the siteto honor Thomas Dimmock. On 22 Sep 1642 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA,Thomas was appointed by the Colony Court to be one of the Council ofWar.
On 10 Oct 1642 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, The Court approved achoice to elect Thomas as a Lieutenant (then the highest rank) of thecompany of militia in Barnstable.
In 1644 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, The lands of Barnstable werepurchased from the Indians. Four main purchases were made(appropriately called the First Purchase, Second Purchase, ThirdPurchase and Fourth Purchase). Thomas served as a witness to the firstand second. On 5 Jun 1644 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Mr. Dimmockand Mr. Crow were reappointed as magistrates or assistants of Mr.Freeman, who was the chief justice of the Inferior Court andassistant, or associate judge, of the Higher Court.

In 1650 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Thomas was one ofthe commissioners of Plymouth Colony. He was responsible forconferring with a similar commission from the Massachusetts Colony, tomake decisions about titles for the lands and Shawwamet and Patuxet.
On 7 Aug 1650 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Thomas was ordained anElder of the Barnstable Church, of which he had been a member sinceits organization. The Barnstable Church Records, kept by Rev. Lathrop,show "Brother Beirce his wife and Goody Chippman joyned to theCongregation ye day yt Brother Dimmick was invested Elder ... Aug 7,1650." Also, "Dayes of Humiliation ... August ye 7, 1650. Ffor theinvesting of my Brother Dimmicke into the office of an Ellder." Thomaswas known from that time in the records as Elder Thomas Dimmock. On 8Dec 1653 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Thomas Dimmock and others(Henry Cobb, John Cooper and Thomas Hinckley) took the inventory ofRev. John Lothrop's estate. Rev. Lothrop was the pastor of theBarnstable Church, and his will was dated 10 Aug 1653.
In 1654 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA, Thomas Dimmock leased his farm.The town records described his lot as "a grant of a great lot to Mr.Dimmock, with meadow adjoining, at a Little Running Brook at ye EastEnd of the plantation, toward Yarmouth, which Lands is in the presentpossession of George Lewis, Sen'r, let and farmed out to him for somecertain years by the said Mr. Dimmock."
He left a will before 4 Jun 1658 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA; On 4Jun 1658, the nuncopative will of Thomas Dimmock was probated. It wasattested to by Anthony Annable and John Smith. In it, it is statedthat "when he was sick last summer, he said what little he had hewould give to his wife, for the children were hers as well as his."
