NEHGR Vol. CVLIX, Oct. 1995, Whole # 596 publication gives birth as1652 and death as about 1727-1728. HHH gives birth as between 1650 and1654 and death as between 1727 and 1738. Data from Winch gives hismother as Rhoda Wilson; his birth as 1652; his birthplace at Windsor,CT; his death as 1730. Data from Knapp supplied birth and deathinformation used here.
Many include Hannah Knapp as wife of Zerubbabel but I believe this tobe erroneous. Many others agree. David W. Hoyt does not includeHannah probably because he could find no supporting records orevidence for the union. I include the following comments from FredKnapp who covers my own conclusions and adds additional food forthought.
"My personal opinion is that since the only place the marriage ofHannah Knapp and Zerubbabel Hoyt is shown is in the Nicholas KnappGenealogy, that ALL of us who are
interested should drop her from that connection.
Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G., eludes to the fact that after herfather's death in April 1670, that there is NO KNOWN record of her tobe found. As we both agree, if Zerubbabel Hait [Hoyt] did marry aHannah Knapp, I sincerely doubt it would have occurred in Stamford, and very doubtful that he would have married a woman 10 years or sohis senior, not with- standing the number of children she had at alate date. I doubt he even married a Knapp, and that we will neverknow who he married as a first wife!
This is another "grasping at straws" issue. What disturbs me withthis one and many more like it found in the NKG is that even thoughDr. Knapp knew the information to be erroneous, he elected to publishit anyway. My recommendation is to drop her as a first wife, and asyou say make comment that will clear the air on the subject. I canadd little else that we
haven't already discussed. If the professionals haven't found it bynow, it is doubtful that anyone else will either!"

GENERAL COMMENTS [Draft copy - Contains some spelling/typo errorsand has not been edited for content and proper grammar]
Knapp Families 14 Jul 1997
Early genealogies and printed works contributed many myths, misconceptions and out right "atrocious genealogical blunders" asrelated to the early Knapp immigrant families. Many of these errorscurrently referred to in today's jargon as being "GenealogicalViruses", are yet being quoted and tend to make one wonder just whatis to be believed. As many of us are beginning genealogical researchat the amateur level and before we are fully aware of what is requiredto make an acceptable Family Research Project valid, we start bycopying anything and everything we can get our hands on that apply towhat we hope is our family ancestors and history, which includescopying down bad information and broadcasting it further withoutknowledge that we are doing the same. Result: More compoundedproblems for those of the future and many incorrect lineagesdeveloped.
These examples abound in the Nicholas Knapp Genealogy (1953), by (Dr.)A. A. Knapp. Some Dr. Knapp alludes to and many have never beencorrected except in a sporadic fashion. Some of the instances ofthese myths and errors are as follows:
1-Nicholas Knapp, was a brother, Cousin, Nephew, Uncle, etc, toWilliam Knapp, Aron Knapp, and Roger Knapp. Not true! Currentresearch (1995), proves no relationship exists between Nicholas &William Knopp, and that they are of clearly two distinctly differentsurnames, i.e., Knapp vs Knopp. In-so-far as Aron and Roger Knapp areconcerend, the only relationship that can be stated is they have thesame surname as Nicholas, e.g., Knapp. No relationship has ever beenproven among any of these early Knapp immigrants and is at
present presumed that they all of independent Knapp lines, devoid ofany connection to one another whatsoever.
2-The Nicholas Knapp Genealogy does not reflect sources for theinformation contained in the writing except to quote where known a fewWills and Land Records or a miscellaneous record that we of today mayprobably never see for verification purposes. Many persons are notaware that the composition of the Genealogy was printed "as is" basedon information forwarded to Dr. Knapp by various and sundry personswho were Knapps by birth or connected in some allied way, generallythrough marriages. Efforts were made to attempt to
make sure as much information in the Genealogy was verified, butobviously with a task as monumental as the one Dr. Knapp undertook, much was printed "as is", further compounding any errors that the datamay have contained without verification. None-the-less, without theworks produced by Dr. Knapp it is quite doubtful that many Knapps oftoday and allied families would not have a clue as to the backgroundof the family name. The Nicholas Knapp Genealogy with all it's knownerrors and faults is the most quoted source of
information on the surname found in print and appears in amateur aswell as professional genealogical writings. The addage to apply whenusing this genealogy is "Use but verify". Any attempt on the author'spart to quote a definite source for each entry in the genealogy wouldin itself encompass many more pages than the current genealogy has.The author clarifies this and states the information contained thereinis known to contain error and
some error of statment, but none-the-less it is to be used as a basisfor one's further investigation of their family lines.
3-Claims exist that our ancestor Nicholas Knapp, was married first to,Elinor Lockwood, Elinor Disbrowe, and in some writings, ElinorWaterbury. None of these claims HAVE EVER been documented nor willthey ever be as they are not within the scope of what the officialrecords that remain extant state. In depth research of this problemas late as Novemeber 1995, has produced what should have been statedfrom the beginning, and that being "ANCESTRY REMAINS UNDISCOVERED". Norecord has ever been found that would give even a slight
"hint" as to what her surname may have been. She could have just aswell be labeled a Smith, Jones or any other surname and always withoutjustification. Conscientious genealogist and descendants of thisfamily should annotate their personal charts and research as "Elinor__??__, ancestry unknown or undiscovered".
4-English ancestries for Nicholas and his first wife, Elinor appearfrom time to time in writings of a non-professional nature and are oftquoted in some researcher's charts as being authentic. Nothing isfurther from the truth than to make such claims. The earliest claimthat any of us who lay claim to the surname in any way, can only do sobeginning with the extant records of
1630, at Watertown, Massachusetts.
5-No marriage date has ever been found for Nicholas and Elinor, however, based on the birth of their first child, Jonathan, theirestimated date of marriage was probably 1629/30, in England and isquoted as such in many current writings, though some seem to believethey married at Watertown, MA. Since the first 2 pages of theWatertown Books are forever lost, there is no way that aninvestigation can be made to ascertain the fact one way or the
other. In these cases one must take an estimated view of when theaction may have occurred, but bear in mind that the actual date may beanywhere from 3-5 years earlier, than the estimated date reflected. That is the best any of us can do in the absence of an officialrecord.
6-There are two questionable entries that remain to be solved in themake-up of the family of Nicholas and Elinor. The first being themarriage of their daughter, Hannah, who is presently stated to havemarried Zerubabel Hoyt in 1673. No record has been found to documentthis claim, though it is found in abundance as being quoted in manycharts. In 1995, it was simply found that Hannah was born 3-6-1643,Watertowen, Middlesex Co, MA, and no further
information known about her after her father's Will of 15 Apr 1670, atwhich time she was a single women. The second entry is the date andplace of birth cited for their son, Moses Knapp. Currently he isreflected as the youngest son and the 8th child born to Nicholas andElinor, and born probably at Wethersfield, Hartford Co, CT. Again nodocumentation appears that will support the conclusion. Consideringthe English tradition of willing or passing their lands, fathersgenerally willed their home lot and other belongings to the eldest sonliving. This being the case where Moses Knapp is concerned, it wouldappear that Moses was the eldest son and was probably born ca1630 orbefore at Watertown, MA or possibly even in England. There are manydates ranging from 1630 to 1645 cited as birthdates for Moses, and theoft quoted is the spurious LDS-IGI, where it is stated he was born 5Aug 1645. The point is stated only that there is still another avenueto explore as relates to these two children of Nicholas and Elinor.
7-Early writings reflect that Nicholas Knapp is a descendant of "SirRoger de Knapp", supposedly Knighted by King Henry VIII at aTournament in 1530. All such statments are fictional at best and arethe product of an unscrupulous English genealogist attempting tosatisfy the ambitions of some American client. There are no officialdocuments to be found to prove such claims, as there was NO touramentheld at Suffolk or Essex Counties in England during the period soclaimed. Further there are no records that reflect the name of RogerKnapp, in either of those counties at any time.
8-The Knapp Family Crest - The current Family Crest is an emblem thatmay be used by current day Knapp's if they so desire, but must do sowith the knowledge that it bears no entitlement to heraldry, and maydisplay it as they wish with this thought in mind. All grantees ofthis Crest are deceased with no known descendant living, who would beentitled to it's use.
9-There DEFINITELY is no connection of any sort to the oft claimedancestry of Nicholas Knapp and that being that John Knapp and MarthaBlois were his parents. As previously stated no supporting evidencehas ever been found to establish and ancestry of ANY VALIDIDTY forNicholas or his wives!
10-Previous thoughts were that Nicholas Knapp was probably theNicholas Knapp of Wells-by-the-Sea, Co Norfolk, EN and that he marriedone Susan Miterson. While this connection would seem highly probableand does fall within the time-frame of our immigrant ancestor, it hasbeen proven that this connection is invalid as the Nicholas Knapp ofWells-by-the-Sea, that married Susan Mitterson is accounted for andwas living in Co Norfolk, England well past our immigrants knownresidence in America!
11-Probably the most current and reliable source of informationrelating to Nicholas and family is the condensed bibliographicsketches on families who arrived in America between 1620-1633, and isentitled "The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England1620-1633 (1995 - in 3 Volumes), by Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G.Articles relating to the ancestry of William KNOPP [not Knapp], alsoappear in these volumes and in earlier articles which establishWilliam Knopp's ancestry, etc, etc., including that of his first
wife, Judith Tue. These articles give sufficient extant sourcereferences to prove and disprove the many myths and mistatements foundin early day writings and should be adhered to by conscientious KnappFamily Researchers.
