All data from Lewis. Family Newsletter Winter 1978-79 Vol I Number I -James William Thompson McAllister, the oldest child of Wm. J.F.andElizabeth, was born 30 Dec 1822 at Lewes, DE. Md 28 Aug. 1843 toEliza Ellen Short at Philadelphia. James and Eliza had four childrenwhom we know about at the present time. One daughter, Sarah, age 4years showed with her parents in the 1850 Census. In the 1860 CensusEliza was listed as a widow. She had Dau Sarah E. age, 14 years. DaugIda, age 9 years, and son Joseph, age 7. In the account book ofMortician David H. Bowen and Son we find, Sept 3, 1849 made 2 ft 6 incoffin for J.W.T. McAllister's child $3.50. On 31 Aug 1850 UncleJames paid his account in full ($4.50) for the burial of this unnamedchild of unknown sex. There is some evidence that there could havebeen a post humous child for them also. Vital Statistics forPhiladelphia show a child, William McAllister, born 28 Jan 1858, died18 Feb 1858 age 3 weeks, son of James McAllister. More research willhave to be done to prove if this was a
child of our Uncle James. From the same mortician records we learn thedetail of Uncle James' burial (GS film 527,813) page 60. Made for theestate of J.W.T. McAllister by order of the board of Health:--5' 10"cloth coverd coffin--$35.00. For Plate Lettering-4.00; For box &sewing to cask-5.50, For putting corpse in ice-4.50, For use ofhearse-4.00, For shrouding materials trimming & sash-5.25, Forwoman's bill-3.50, For digging grave at Mount Mariah-3.50 Total$84.75. The public ledger gave two notices of the death of UncleJames. The one from the Dept of Health reads: "Death of HealthOfficer, James W.T.McAllister, Health Officer, died on Wed. night athis residence in Jefferson Ave above Washington, after a shortillness. The deceased was appointed by Gov Pollock and had served twoyears and 11 month. He was formerly a Tipstaff (Sherif or Bailef) inthe Court of Quarter Sessions." The family account is a littledifferent:- "Died suddenly, on the 24th Inst. Mr. James W. T.McAllister in the 35th year of his age. His friends and those of hisfamily and the Jerusalem H.A.#8 of the Masonic Fraternity and the OldGenerals and the Wayne Artillary are invited to attend his funeralfrom his late residence #18 Jefferson Ave. Without further notice, onSunday at 3:00 O'clock. To proceed to Mount Moriah Cemetery." Thisfuneral was an outstanding one. The cost was double that of Mr.Bowen's average client. We are glad to know a little more about UncleJim's family and hope to find some of his descendants who could stillbe living in the Phil.area.
