Talk by Fuller S. Broadbent at funeral W.J.F.McAllister 21 Aug,1943 at Kanab, UT
My brothers and sisters, I feel highly honored in being asked tospeak on this occasion, the passing of one of the pioneers of theSouthern country. This is not an occasion for mourning but rather anoccasion for rejoicing, when we think of the long and useful life ofour brother who lies here before us. The greater part of his life wasspent in the service of his fellow-man. It seems to me that I havebeen acquainted with him all my life. I have lived a neighbor to him.I was a member of the Kanab Brass Band which he labored so hard tostart. That undertaking called for a great deal of his time, which heseemingly enjoyed in the service to his town. When it came time forrehersal or time to go out on serenade he was always on time. He wasassociated with my father George Mace, and others who by the way didpractically all the carpenter work in the construction of the KanabHall under the direction of Bishop Joel H. Johnson. Much of the laborperformed in that undertaking was simply service to the community. Itseems to me that it would be an easy matter for one who is accustomedto speaking to an audiance on occasions of this kind, to be able tospeak at great length where there is so much that might be said of thesterling qualities and the valuable service that has been given by ourbrother who lies
here. I would be ungreatful indeed were I not to pay tribute to thesterling qualities and the untiring efforts of his help-mates wholaboured unceasingly for his comfort and for the maintenance of hishome. We are told that there was fifteen children born to this union, all of which are and were valuable and good citizens in thecommunities where they reside. Our brother who lies here was apioneer in every sense of the word; he crossed the plains with an oxteam he was still labeled a pioneer after arriving in Utah, when hewas called to
help settle Southern Utah. He was a missionary to the Zuni Indians;he was a soldier in the Black Hawk War; he gave freely of his musicaltalent during the many years he resided in Kanab; he was choir leaderalmost as far back as I can remember; it was his hobby to always be ontime when his services were needed. In closing let us hope that hisposterity will carry on in the service of their maker and in theservice of the community where they reside perfecting in their livesthe worthy example as set out and maintained by them who we have mettoday to pay homage to. May the Lord continue to bless us all andespecially
those immediately interested, I ask in the worthy name of our Savior.Amen
