All data from McDowell. This GEDCOM file was prepared from Familiesof the Pilgrims by
Richard Warren, published in 1986 by the Massachusetts Society ofMayflower Descendants. It lists 3 generations: Richard Warren and hiswife Elizabeth, their children, their grandchildren, and thegrandchildren's spouses.
"Richard Warren is among the most enigmatic of the pioneers whocrossed the Atlantic in 1620 in the Mayflower. Clearly a man of somerank, he was accorded by Governor William Bradford the prefix 'Mr.,'pronounced Master, used in those times to distinguish someone becauseof birth or achievement. From his widow's subsequent landtransactions, we can assume that he was among the wealthier of theoriginal Plymouth settlers.
"Nathaniel Morton, who supplements Bradford and a few other on-site17th century historians in giving us our knowledge of early Plymouth, reviewed in his 1669 'New Englands Memoriall' the year 1628, and hecommented: 'This year died Mr. Richard Warren, who was an useful
instrument; and during his life bare a deep share in the Difficultiesand Troubles of the first settlement of the Plantation ofNew-Plimoth.' We are indebted to Morton for our knowledge of whosigned the Mayflower Compact, and Morton has Warren as the 12th signer(out of 41), which is probably more an estimate of Morton's view ofWarren's importance than historical fact, for Morton's transcriptionof the Compact signers was most likely his own modification of theList of Passengers from Bradford's 'History of Plimoth Plantation.'
"In 'Mort's Relation,' published in 1622, we learn that Warren waschosen, when the Mayflower stopped at Cape Cod before reachingPlymouth, to be a member of a ten-man exploring party, and he wasdescribed as being 'of London.' Charles Edward Banks in 'Ancestry andHomes of the Pilgrim Fathers' tells us: "Richard Warren came fromLondon and was called a merchant (by Mourt). Extensive research inevery available source of information -- registers, chancery, andprobate, in the London courts -- proved fruitless in an attempt toidentify him." Although research has continued since Banks, we stillcannot find records of Warren's parentage or activities in England.
"He married prior to 1611 Elizabeth ______ . We might assume he wasborn around 1580. He was not of the Leyden, Holland, Pilgrims, butjoined them in Southampton to sail on the Mayflower, leaving his wifeand five daughters to follow in 1623 on the Anne. His two sons wereborn in Plymouth. Although Warren would seem to be among the moreimportant of the colonists, Bradford does not mention him in his'History,' except in the List of Passengers.
"In the 1627 Division of Cattle, Warren appears as one of the heads ofthe 12 groups which are formed to own the cattle. He is also amongthe 58 'Purchasers' who in 1627 became the sole proprietors of land inPlymouth Colony. However, he was not among the inner group of eight."
Elizabeth was honored by being allowed to succeed to her husband'srights as "Purchaser." She lived to see at least 75 of her greatgrandchildren." Name: variously given as Marsh, March, Jouatt, etc. There is no proof of any of these.
The article "Richard Warren of the Mayflower and Some of HisDescendants" (NEHGS Journal, 1985, p. 618) says: "Her maiden name isnot known. In the Warren Genealogy, published in 1854 by Dr. JohnCollins Warren, her name is given as Elizabeth Juatt. While it istrue that a Richard Warren of Greenwich in Kent married Elizabeth, daughter of __??__ Ivat and widow of __??__ Marsh, as appeared in the1620 visitation of Devon, there is no proof that Richard Warren is theone who came to Plymouth. ... In 1872 the Harleian Society publishedan edition of the Devonshire Visitation of 1620, and in this editionthe much discussed Warren pedigree appeared with the statement'Inserted later by hand.' ...
Richard, the third son of Christopher Warren, was baptized 15 August1619, and was five years younger than his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth March, who was not licensed to marry her first husband until 1629."
