He was only a lad when the great tragedy of the "Trail of Tears"occurred, the Cherokees having been driven from their homes at thepoints of soldiers' bayonets. Most of the emigrants were fullbloods, through many hundreds were a small degree of Cherokee blood, even moreloyal, if words can describe their feelings to their Indian friends, kinsmen, and nation. As a youth, James was given every advantage ofschooling afforded in the unsettled conditions of early days in theWest. He studied at Dwight Mission, a Presbyterian school was attendedby youths of leading Cherokee families at their own expenses for boardand school supplies. He attended Dartmouth College, attending in1852-53. On account of increasing anti-slavery sentiment in the North, southern boys whose families were slave owners began leaving thenorthern colleges. James, described as the handsome, fair haired youngCherokee, returned to the Cherokee Nation and married Esther Hoyt. Both the Methodist Episcopal and the Presbyterian Churchs dividedalong sectional lines, over the slavery question, which seriouslyhampered the work of these great religious organizations. So, in April1858, the Wards joined the Moravian Church. Soon after James, Jr. wasappointed assistant missionary to Reverend Gilbert Bishop at NewSpringplace. Brother Ward served as the teacher of the school at themission station. In August 1862, four Cherokee Pins, Federal Scouts, minds inflamed with hatred and revenge, told the Negro hired man thatthey were looking for James Ward to kill him for his Confederatesympathies. Keetoowahs were generally opposed to mixed blood Cherokeesand slaveholders. Many Keetoowahs served in the Union Army, employedas scouts, they were known as "Cherokee Pins", from their Keetoowahinsignia, two pins crossed on the left coat lapel. Brother Bishopurged Ward to move to safety at Siloam Springs, but James refused andstayed to help Brother Bishop and his family in case of trouble. Latein the afternoon on September 2, 1862, James saddled his horse to rideout and bring in the milk cows. Darius, his seven year old son, beggedto go along but his father said no not this evening. James stoodlistening for a minute then quickly mounted his horse and rode off ata brisk trot toward the creek. He was barely out of sight when Dariusheard a volley of shots from down by the creek. Hardly five minuteslater, a party of twenty to thirty Cherokee Pins, with their facespainted to disguise themselves, surrounded James Ward's house. Theyrobbed the house, as the frightened family huddled together on theporch. The leader spoke to Mrs. Ward in Cherokee telling her to getready to go with his men. She carried her infant twins in her arms, being refused the privilege of taking the Negro maid, to help her.Brother Bishop was also taken prisoner.
