Luther was a Horse's Patootie apparently . He is credited , in thegenealogy, with being the person responsible for introducing the NavelOrange to Riverside, CA, but local Riverside history gives his wife(3rd) Eliza, the credit,or most of it. When I get a scanner, I willinsert pages 13 thru 25 + addenda of "A History of Citrus in theRiverside Area" by Esther H. Klotz, Harry W. Lawton,and Joan H Hall,the chapter entitled "Eliza Tibbets and Her Washington Naval OrangeTrees".
Luther Calvin Tibbets' first wife, Joanna, died, and he married hersister Phoebe who in turn divorced him April 25,1865. She reclaimedher maiden name, and went back to Framingham, MA with their 3children.
Luther Calvin was constantly sueing somebody, and was referred to as"Litigation Tibbets". In 1872 he purchased the "The west half of thesouthwest quarter of section 34 and the West half of the Northwestquarter of Sec. 34, Township 2, Range 3, West of San Bernardino Baseand meridian". In 1874 he sold the northern 80 acres, and in 1879under Homestead Cert, # 132, (application #438), he aquired "The Westhalf of the southwest quarter of sec.34 Township 2,South of Range 5,West of San Bernardino Base and Meridian". On this considerableacreage he grew alfalfa, raised livestock, and 300 Citrus and 100Deciduous trees. In 1885, he subdivided some of his land, advertisingfor sale, 51 city lots cornering on Arlington and Magnolia Avenues. In1892 a severe freeze destroyed the citrus and other crops, real estateprices plummeted, the Riverside Bank failed, and Luther went bankrupt.Eliza died suddenly of asthma while visiting in Santa Barbara. Lutherlost EVERYTHING, and died in the County Hospital, an indigent.

He got his MD atGeorge Washington University and interned at Sibley Memorial Hospital,He met and married Hope, a nurse there and they went to Battle Creek,MI and Philadelphia, PA for his post-graduate work inOtolaryngology. He returned to Washington, DC and set up practice inhis specialty. He was a member of the American Medical Socieity andwas junior surgeon at Episcopal EENT Hospital, He was clinicalinstructor of otolaryngology at Georgetown University Medical Schooland visiting surgeon at the following hospitals: George WashingtonUniversity Hospital, Gallinger Municipal, Glendale TB Hospital andSibley Memorial Hospital.
