Lydia and Ahira lived in a large farmhouse half way up Skinner Hill,midway between North Dana and Dana Center. At the top of the hill wasthe house of her brother Burrell and in the other direction was thehome of her sister Lucretia Woods. The large weather beaten house andbarn will soon be torn down for the Metropolitan Water SupplyCommission of Boston, which is making over this section into a basinfor a reservoir. This section will include the homes of all the DanaAmsdens. A photograph in the possession of this author shows a verykindly woman in the person of Lydia, and it is reported that theylived a very happy life together. Toward the last of his life Ahirabecame blind and formed the habit of smoking a pipe, which was not oneof the habits he was addicted to in former life. It is said one fallday he was husking corn in the barn and had been smoking as usual,resulting in the pipe bowl turning over. This set some of the husksafire. A neighbor coming by noticed him with the corn husks allablaze in the situation above mentioned and with speed extinguishedthe blaze. This incident did not cure the habit until he set his vestafire. After that he never smoked again.
Ahira died Jan 24, 1877 just twenty minutes before his son Darius whowas killed by the fall of a limb, which crushed his skull whilechopping wood for his father, a chore he wasn't use to doing, being bytrade a carpenter.
