Jacob served in King Philips War under Capt. Joseph Syll, Jun. 24,1676. He was assigned to Charlestown Co. in Aug. 1676. Paige'sHistory of Cambridge as well as others, assumes that Jacob wasunmarried, but we find in Middlesex Co., records the will of SusannaAmsden, widow of Jacob dated Oct. 14, 1707. Her name before marriagewas Warrett, and the presumtive evidence that no issue resulted fromthis marriage would seem to be well born out by the fact that shemakes bequests to several brothers and sisters of her own, and toother people, thus disposing of the entire property, while no childrenare named....". "...and his is the earliest gravestone to be found inthis country, and is in Old Christ Church Burying Ground near HarvardSquare, Cambridge, MA. Jacob received wages for services in KingPhillips War in the amount of three pounds on June 24, 1676, under theleadership of Captain Joseph Syll. He was assigned to CharlestownCo., Mass. in Aug. 1676.
Paige's book, History of Cambridge, as well as others, assume Jacobwas unmarried, but in Murray Brown's , Some Descendants of IsaacAmsden, a recorded will of Susanna Amsden, widow of Jacob, dated Oct.14, 1707 was found in Middlesex County records. Her name beforemarriage was Merritt or Warrett. Susanna's will makes bequests toseveral brothers and sisters of her own, and to others, disposing theentire estate. This is considered presumptive evidence that no Issueresulted from this marriage.
Jacob was a glazier by trade and lived on the westerly side of AshStreet, Cambridge. He contracted to repair the glass of the meetinghouse for 10 shillings in 1681, and to keep it in repair for ten yearsfollowing, for 15 shillings per year. History Of Cambridge, p. 13.
Jacob's tax bill for 1688 was 2s. 6d. indicating no large amount ofproperty was owned at this time. Much more was owned at a later datehowever, as was indicated in Susanna's will.
Jacob is recorded in Judge Seawall's diary as follows: "Jan. 1, 1701,entrance of the eighteenth century. Just about break-a-day, JacobAmsden and three other trumpeters gave blast with the trumpets on thecommon, near the Alfords. Then went to the green chamber and soundedthere until sunrise".
Jacob died at Cambridge, and his gravestone is the earliest Amsdengrave to be found in this country. It is located in the AncientChrist Church Burying Ground at Harvard, Cambridge, Mass. Hisgravestone bears the following inscription:
Here lyes ye body of
Jacob Amsden
Aged 44 years
Died ye 11 of June
1701

Jacob and his family lived on a farm situated in what has been knownas Doubleday Village in later years. After Jacob's death, his eldestson, Massena as administrator of the estate describes it thusly: "Theproperty consists of 160 acres of land well proportioned into mowing, tillage, pasturage and woodland, well watered and fenced, with a largeand elegant brick house, a sixty foot barn and outbuildings, also abrickyard, and water privileges with a sawmill on the same, also apiece of land 3/4 of a mile from said farm on the plain of about 11acres".
It is said by Frank Whitney (1934) who is 86 years old, and who onceowned the property that grain was also ground on the place. "I havepersonally been over the place which is fairly extensive forMassachusetts. The brick house is in a good state of preservation andis said to be the best built house in Dana. The dam has broken downand the water all run out, but enough falls over the rocks to make avery pretty waterfall, and below these falls is a gorge andfoundations for the mill are to be seen".
"It is assumed Jacob made the brickyard largely to build his house. Idistinctly remember my grandmother telling me he built the two brickschoolhouses in Dana. It has also been said that Jacob was a mostexcellent farmer".
Jacob was drowned in his own pond August 1843, the boat from which hewas fishing having overturned. By another account he was drowned inthe North Dana pond where at one time Rollin Doubleday had a mill.
The farm was sold at auction to Jacob's son Festus F. Amsden. Laterit was bought by Joseph E. Doubleday, and is most likely the reason itis called Doubleday Village today. Jacob and Lydia had six children, the two youngest choosing Joseph Doubleday as their guardian as theywere minors at the time of Lydia's death. Murray M. Brown,Descendents of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934)p. 50.

Jacob and Sarah lived in the same local as his father before him, knowtoday as Doubleday Village, Twp of Dana. The small cemetery in whichhe and Sarah are buried is near a fork in the road a half mile or morefrom North Dana Village, the road to the left leading to Petersham andthat to the right to the old Seth Williams place. This branch is thenext beyond that fork that leads to Dana Center and with which itshould not be confused. The cemetery is to the right of the highwayand about 100 ft from the road, and would never be seen through thethick pine forest. There is no fence around the cemetery and it ismostly grown up trees with perhaps eight or ten markers , mostlyslate. Those of Jacob and Sarah are easily found, one of them brokenoff near the foundation line.
Tradition has not handed down many facts on this family. I aminformed by Mrs. Henry Brown, wife of the Congregational minister ofDana, also great granddaughter of Jacob, that Pamelia Woods hisgranddaughter wrote a short history of the family, but no copies areto be found. A chair in the possession of Mrs. Brown belonged to thisJacob and is said to have been made by him. Murray M. Brown,Descendents of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934).
