Jacob, in 1790 bought for one hundred pounds, sixty acres of landadjoining that of his father Jacob. His occupation is listed as thatof a joiner and a trader.
The Twp. of Dana's Centennial Celebration in 1901 had as it's mainspeaker and President of the Day the Hon. N.L. Johnson. He is quotedas follows: "it is certain that there was a small settlement, anucleus of a village, a few dwellings, a tavern, blacksmith's shop, store, potash manufactory, and perhaps a tannery near where this tentnow stands, many years before the incorporation of this town. I wellremember hearing my honored grandfather speak of Major Joel Amsden, asthe keeper of the tavern which stood upon the site of the presenthotel. To this village, people came for their store supplies, met onsocial occasions, justice court was held and they often assembled forpublic worship. These social ties and business relations broughtthese neighbors into special mutual sympathy, so that there grew up asort of incipient commonwealth. The town centers, to which theybelonged were many miles apart, with poor hilly roads. Ox carts werethe principal means of conveyance of freight and persons, horse wagonsat the time being scarcely known. The law required the payment of aparish tax, and made attendance upon public worship a certain numberof days a year obligatory. These requirements caused discontent andbecause of isolation the people seemed almost oppressive.
On June 9, 1778, Joel Amsden, Joseph Doubleday, Jonathon Parkhurst andothers petitioned the General Court to be set off, with their estates, and make a new town. There were various among them who did not careto have a new township owing to the cost, Bezaleel Amsden, Joel'sbrother, among them. The matter however was settled in 1800 with aletter to the court reconsidering their objections.
Town meetings were generally held in the meeting house or sometimes inthe old tavern hall kept by Mr. Day and Major Joel Amsden. The firsttown meeting voted Joel Amsden town clerk, and Bezaleel Amsden, S.Johnson, and Jacob Whipple selectmen.
Joel Amsden shortly removed to Hardwick, MA. and then on to Malone,NY. where he died in 1831. Murray M. Brown, Descendents of IsaacAmsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934).

The following is a quote from Joel Amsden's sister, Jerusha BrownAmsden, to describe his character. "Nineth Joel, born 5th Sept. 1812amid great rejoicing because he was a boy. He proved to such a boyand man that these demonstrations were for a rarity perfectly suitedto the case. One of the few boys who never joined his companions inanything which his sense of propriety, justice or mercy taught him ifhe did he would violate his convictions, and yet was never called acoward. Everyone seemed aware that he had fixed points from which itwas in vain to try and swerve him". Murray M. Brown, Descendents ofIsaac Amsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934), p. 66.
The following newspaper article appeared in the Scranton PennsylvaniaTribune. Murray M. Brown, Descendents of Isaac Amsden of CambridgeMassachusetts, (1934), p. 66.
Joel Amsden was a resident engineer of the Block River Canal, a branchof the Erie Canal in NY. While there he was Brigade Inspector of theMilitia, with the rank of Major on the staff of the Brigadier General.
Removing to Charlestown, MA. he had charge of the engineering of theturbine water works there, and was civil engineer at the Glendon IronWorks, near Easton, PA.
In 1850 he was induced by Colonel George W. Scranton to come toScranton and the following year brought his family here where he laidout the town of Scranton, proper mapping the streets as they are now.Later Joel became the resident engineer of the North and Southsections of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad between theNicholson Tunnel and Pocano Mountain.
Upon the death of Major McNeil, Joel became chief engineer of theroad, in which capacity he served until relieved by James Archibald, the general agent. Later engaging in the private practice of civilengineering and architecture, Joel Amsden erected a large number ofbuildings in Scranton, many of which still stand. In 1853 he erecteda house on the corner of Washington and Lackawanna Avenues, and therehe had his offices until he died. Since then, the residence has beenutilized for business purposes, and is one of the oldest buildings onLackawanna Avenue today. For years he was borough engineer, andbecame the first engineer, holding the position until his death. Asan architect he designed many buildings in different parts of thisstate and in New York.
In religious belief he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.Politically he was a Jacksonian Democrat, and was one of the originalRepublicans of the community. In 1853 he established the firstbookstore here, and while carrying on that business was appointedpostmaster.
