Washington was one of Athol's most prominent citizens and institutedmany worthwhile changes in the town. On reliable grounds we areinformed that he built the first reservoir for supplying the town withwater, and which has since been discontinued. Perhaps nothing candescribe his achievements any better than his obituary taken from theAthol Transcript of Tuesday, Nov 9, 1886.
Obituary Washington H.Amsden
The old business men of Athol, those who by their public spiritedactivity and energy have done so much to make our town what it is, arepassing away one by one. The last to be taken from our midstseemingly suddenly, but not altogether unexpectedly is Washington H.Amsden, one of our best known and most useful men, prominent in townaffairs, and always ready to put his shoulder to the wheel when anylocal enterprise needed encouraging.
Mr. Amsden had been a severe sufferer from lung troubles for severalyears past, and had been confined to his house more or less for thepast year. His trouble was seriously aggravated during the period ofhis service in the Legislature in 1884, by the close confinement inthe poorly ventilated halls of the statehouse and he was never a wellman thereafter. It was not known however, till a few days before hisdeath that he was in imminent danger, and the news of his death wasreceived with surprise by many of his intimate friends.
Mr. Amsden was a native of Dana, but came to Athol some forty yearsago, and with his brother Festus engaged in the sash and blindbusiness where the Morse shops now are. He afterwards went to Orange, but returned and resumed business at the same place. Festus Amsdendied from an injury, and the shops being burned later, Washingtonpurchased the Kennebunk property, and under his able management, itbecame one of the largest and most profitable industries in town. Oflate years the business has been managed by his son Otho.
Washington retired from active interest in it to enjoy his beautifulhome as well as his health would permit the fruits of his long andpersevering industry, and a reputation for honor and integrity as abusiness man that was never impeached.
In town affairs Mr. Amsden was always energetic and useful. Hisjudgment was sound and keen and always outspoken and forceful in hisviews, his influence was strong. He has served as selectman, supervisor of roads, director of the Athol National Bank, which he wasinstrumental in starting, trustee of the Athol Savings Bank, andtrustee of the local agricultural Society, besides holding otherpositions of business, trust and responsibility. He represented thedistrict in the Legislature in 1884 and was in politics one of ourstaunchest Republicans as well as an uncompromising temperance man.Socially he was a very genial and pleasant man. He belonged to theFirst Unitarian Church and was a liberal supporter thereof. He willbe greatly missed, not only by his business friends, but by all whoknew him. Mr. Amsden accumulated a handsome fortune, which descendsto his family, consisting of a widow, four sons and a daughter. Theyhave universal sympathy in their bereavement. Murray M. Brown,Descendents of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934)
